How to Get Into Appalachian Law (2026-2027 Guide)

Appalachian School of Law is a small, rural law school in Grundy, Virginia. Its JD emphasizes practice in underserved communities, with natural resources law, required externships, and community service central to its curriculum.

This guide walks you through how to get into Appalachian Law.

1. Appalachian Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics

Appalachian Law Class of 2028:

Appalachian Law Class of 2027:

These are the full-time first-year populations in the 2025 and 2024 ABA reports. Appalachian admits students in both fall and spring, so the annual reporting population is not limited to one fall intake. Enrollment increased from 62 to 92. The LSAT median fell one point while the GPA median rose 0.16; the upper LSAT quartile increased one point.

Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.

For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.

2. Appalachian Law Application Essays

Personal Statement (Required)

Appalachian requires an original personal statement of at least 500 words addressing your professional goals and qualifications.

For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.

Optional Background and Appalachian Connection

Applicants may provide a diversity statement, information about an Appalachian connection, and other relevant background. The catalog describes a Personal Background Statement covering life experiences, biographical information, and regional ties.

For more on how to write a diversity or perspective statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.

If you explain your Appalachian connection in this statement, see my Why X Essay Guide.

For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.

Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources

I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.

3. Appalachian Law Resume Requirements

Appalachian requires a resume covering education, employment, and volunteer experience. Include clear dates and concrete responsibilities.

For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.

4. Appalachian Law Letters of Recommendation

Appalachian requires two letters of recommendation and accepts up to four. The catalog requires letters written within two years of applying. Former professors and direct supervisors should provide specific evidence of readiness; letters from friends or relatives are disregarded.

For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).

5. Appalachian Law Interview Process

Appalachian does not conduct formal interviews that affect admissions decisions.

6. Appalachian Law Deadlines and Decision Options

Testing Policy

Appalachian requires the LSAT and LSAC's Credential Assembly Service. It uses the highest LSAT score and accepts scores no more than five years old at enrollment.

Application Dates and Fees

Review is rolling. The catalog identifies December and June as the last LSAT administrations for full consideration for spring and fall, respectively. Admission deferrals are rarely granted and considered individually.

7. Appalachian Law Scholarships and Financial Aid

Merit Scholarships

Merit consideration is automatic. Appalachian's 2025 ABA report states that its scholarships do not require academic performance beyond good academic standing. Institutional awards generally do not stack: the larger replaces the smaller unless an award expressly provides otherwise. Limited need-based aid is available after admission.

Buchanan County scholarships serve qualifying longtime residents or graduates of county high schools. The Francis Gary Powers Memorial Scholarship has a separate application and a 500-1,000-word essay connecting service experience with the legal profession.

Cost of Attendance

For 2026-2027, annual tuition is $41,850. The fall-and-spring budget totals $82,800, including administrative and activity fees, exam software, housing, food, transportation, books, and personal expenses. Loan origination fees depend on actual borrowing. Tuition is set for the first year, not guaranteed for the entire JD.

For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.

8. Appalachian Law Joint Degree Programs

Appalachian's partnerships include accelerated undergraduate pathways and a concurrent graduate certificate:

The Virginia Tech credential is a certificate, not a second master's degree. Appalachian also has preferential-admission partnerships, which are distinct from the accelerated 3+3 arrangements.

9. Appalachian Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)

Appalachian Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):

Virginia was the largest employment destination, followed by Kentucky and West Virginia. Small-firm and public-service work fit this class's placement pattern more closely than large-firm recruiting. A regional practice plan makes more sense here than treating the JD as a routine path to national BigLaw. Compare the full cost after aid with that employment picture.

10. Appalachian Law Areas of Study and Specializations

Natural Resources and Energy: The Natural Resources Law Center connects mineral ownership, energy development, and environmental law. Mineral Title Search and Examination and Solar Energy Law & Policy give this concentration a practical regional focus; a dedicated certificate combines coursework with a writing or practice component.

Health and Access to Justice: The Medical-Legal Partnership links Appalachian with Ballad Health, Virginia Tech, and legal-aid providers. Students examine how housing, benefits, and planning problems affect patients' health and access to care.

Criminal and Appellate Practice: The Criminal Law & Litigation certificate connects substantive courses with advocacy. Work involving the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and West Virginia Public Defender Services offers distinct prosecution and defense settings.

Cybersecurity: Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business provides the concurrent cybersecurity certificate options. Policy and management are separate tracks, allowing students to connect legal study with either institutional decision-making or technology governance.

11. Appalachian Law Clinics and Experiential Learning

Clinics

Pro Bono and Experiential Learning

The required summer externship after the first year involves at least 200 hours of supervised legal work and carries two credits. Students research, write, observe proceedings, and assist with case preparation.

Students also complete 25 community-service hours each semester, with the first-semester course satisfying that term's requirement. Opportunities include the Buchanan County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and Remote Area Medical.

13. Appalachian Law Culture and Student Life

Grundy offers a small-town setting rather than a metropolitan campus. The school's service requirements connect students with surrounding communities, while the Appalachian Women in Law Society, Black Law Students Association, and Appalachian Outdoors provide different ways to participate outside class.

The local legal setting includes county prosecution, legal aid, and natural-resources matters. Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia also lead the recent employment geography. That regional orientation makes the location part of the professional decision, not just a lifestyle preference. The required externship adds a structured opportunity to work beyond campus.
