1. Chapman Fowler Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Chapman Fowler Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 164 | Median: 163 | 25th: 156
- GPA: 75th: 3.82 | Median: 3.70 | 25th: 3.32
Chapman Fowler Law Class of 2027:
- LSAT: 75th: 164 | Median: 162 | 25th: 155
- GPA: 75th: 3.83 | Median: 3.67 | 25th: 3.27
The full-time entering class increased from 143 students in 2024 to 153 in 2025. The LSAT median rose one point and the GPA median rose 0.03. Both 25th percentiles also increased. Completed applications climbed from 2,082 to 2,514, while offers fell from 565 to 516, making the newer admissions pool more competitive.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Chapman Fowler Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
Chapman asks why you want to study law, why you want to attend Fowler, and what additional information the committee should consider. The statement must be typed, double-spaced, and no longer than three pages in 12-point font.
The committee considers background, obstacles, and contributions alongside your academic record.
For more on addressing school interest within this personal statement, see my Why X Essay Guide.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
For more on making your whole application work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)
Chapman's application page requires applicants who were academically disqualified from another law school to attach a statement explaining the circumstances and why they can complete Fowler's course of study, based on interim work, activity, or studies indicating a stronger potential for law study.
Chapman permits one-page addenda addressing academic performance, LSAT results, or adversity. Character and fitness answers must be complete and accurate, with changes disclosed promptly.
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Chapman Fowler Law Resume Requirements
A resume is required. Include employment, volunteer work, extracurricular involvement, honors, and achievements after high school. Chapman considers the extent and quality of your activities as part of its application review.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Chapman Fowler Law Letters of Recommendation
Chapman requires two letters of recommendation and accepts up to three through CAS. Letters may come from academic or professional recommenders.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Chapman Fowler Law Interview Process
Chapman offers individual appointments with the admissions office, along with class visits and law-school tours.
6. Chapman Fowler Law Deadlines and Early Decision
Testing Policy
Chapman requires the LSAT and a CAS report. It primarily considers your highest LSAT score and accepts scores earned within five years.
Application Dates and Fees
The application fee is $0.
- Application opens: September 1
- Binding early decision: November 30
- Early decision notification: December
- Priority application and scholarship deadline: April 15
- Final application deadline: July 15
- FAFSA priority deadline: March 2
Regular review is rolling, and decisions can take ten weeks or longer. An application submitted near the final deadline leaves less time for scholarship and enrollment decisions. Prioritize a complete application over an early submission missing the score or writing that makes your case.
Early Decision
Early decision is binding. Use it only when Chapman is your clear first choice and you are prepared to commit without comparing other admission offers. A particular clinical interest or Southern California career plan can establish fit, but it does not settle the financing question.
For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?.
Program Formats
The standard JD begins in the fall. Chapman also offers a part-time day program with a reduced course load. Consider the effects on course sequencing, tuition, and the time needed to complete the 88-unit degree.
7. Chapman Fowler Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Tuition and Fees
Full-time tuition for 2026-2027 is $66,972, plus a $75 annual Student Bar Association fee. Tuition, that fee, and standard nine-month off-campus living and educational allowances total approximately $106,825 before loan fees and health insurance. The $2,496 insurance charge is waivable with qualifying coverage.
Merit Scholarships
Applicants receive automatic merit consideration. Awards are fixed dollar amounts, generally renewable for three full-time years with a cumulative 2.900 GPA at the end of each spring. Tuition increases can therefore raise your remaining cost. Of the 131 students who entered 2025-2026 with conditional scholarships, 50 had them reduced or eliminated.
Dean's Kennedy Scholarships and Distinguished Student Fellowships
Dean's Kennedy Scholarships support a small group of full-time students with exceptional academic achievement. Distinguished Student Fellowships provide an additional cash award in four installments during the first year. The fall 2026 renewal standard for these programs is a cumulative 2.90 GPA.
First Generation Scholarship
This separate application offers a one-time award of up to $5,000 for students who are the first in their immediate family to earn an undergraduate degree, with priority for service to underserved communities.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Chapman Fowler Law Joint Degree Programs
Chapman offers two four-year, full-time joint degrees. Admission to the partner program is separate from admission to law school. Both joint programs require a cumulative law GPA of at least 2.6 after the first-year law curriculum to continue in the combined curriculum.
- JD/MBA: The Argyros College of Business and Economics partnership combines legal and business study in a 118-credit program. Approved coursework counts toward both degrees.
- JD/MFA in Film and Television Producing: The Dodge College of Film and Media Arts partnership requires 124 credits. Students generally apply to the MFA during their first year of law school and combine legal training with the development, financing, and production of screen projects.
9. Chapman Fowler Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Chapman Fowler's Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 76.2%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 16.9%
- Federal clerkships: 3.8%
- Public service (including government): 16.9%
California accounts for most employment, followed by the District of Columbia and Washington. Chapman has graduates in large firms and federal clerkships, but those outcomes are a minority of the class. The clearest career strategy is a specific California market and practice area, supported by local externships and summer work. Applicants targeting another region need a stronger geographic connection than the school's Southern California location provides.
10. Chapman Fowler Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Entertainment law: The Entertainment Law Certificate combines entertainment, intellectual property, and industry-contract coursework with experiential study. The Entertainment Law Clinic and the Dodge College connection make this a concrete option for students interested in production, licensing, and the legal structure of creative projects.
Environmental, land-use, and real-estate law: The Environmental, Land Use & Real Estate program, known as ENLURE, combines foundational property study with specialized coursework and a writing requirement. Students can study land-use controls, development, environmental regulation, and real-estate transactions within a defined certificate structure.
Tax law: The Frank J. Doti Tax Law Certificate connects tax coursework with trial-level and appellate clinical opportunities. Subjects include federal income, corporate, estate, and gift taxation. Students can develop both technical analysis and the practical skills needed to represent taxpayers.
Criminal practice: The Criminal Law Certificate, directed by Lawrence Rosenthal, includes evidence, police practices, and criminal-practice foundations. The Criminal Defense and Criminal Prosecution clinics connect that preparation to supervised work with the Orange County Public Defender and District Attorney.
11. Chapman Fowler Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
Chapman's clinics combine client work with specialized instruction:
- Entertainment Law Clinic: Students serve as production counsel for independent films, forming entities, registering copyrights, and drafting cast, crew, location, and other production agreements.
- Criminal Defense Clinic: Students assist the Orange County Public Defender with misdemeanor and felony matters. The four-credit course requires Evidence and a background check.
- Criminal Prosecution Clinic: Students work with Orange County prosecutors on criminal matters. This four-credit course also requires Evidence and a background check.
- Tax Law Clinic: Students interview low-income taxpayers, research their disputes, negotiate with the IRS, and prepare matters for the U.S. Tax Court.
- Appellate Tax Advocacy Clinic: Students research significant tax questions and prepare appellate briefs, including amicus submissions, through the Center for the Fair Administration of Taxes.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
Externship placements have included the Ninth Circuit, federal district and bankruptcy courts, the SEC, Public Law Center, and Legal Aid Society of Orange County. Private-sector examples include Universal Pictures and Rutan & Tucker. These settings develop different skills, from judicial research to transactional drafting and client advocacy. The Public Interest Law Foundation raises money for grants supporting students in unpaid public-interest summer positions.
12. Chapman Fowler Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Mary Lee Ryan: Professor of the Practice of Entertainment Law and director of the Entertainment Law Program. Her entertainment and intellectual-property work builds on experience as senior vice president of business affairs at Rondor Music International.
- George Willis: Professor and clinical faculty director of the Tax Law Clinic. His tax practice and teaching draw on work in the IRS's estate and gift tax division and private practice.
- Lawrence Rosenthal: Professor of Law specializing in criminal law and civil rights. He was a federal prosecutor in the Northern District of Illinois and clerked for Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.
- Lan Cao: Betty Hutton Williams Professor of International Economic Law. She studies international trade, development, and business law and wrote Culture in Law and Development: Nurturing Positive Change.
Journals
- Chapman Law Review: The student-run journal publishes legal scholarship and student work and organizes an annual symposium.
13. Chapman Fowler Law Culture and Student Life
Kennedy Hall sits near Old Towne Orange, with restaurants and cafes within walking distance. The 2025 entering class had 153 students, and 28% were first-generation college students. Organizations include the Entertainment and Sports Law Society, Art Law Society, and Chapman Women Lawyers.
Orange County supplies the immediate legal market: county prosecutors and public defenders, courts, nonprofit legal providers, and business firms. Los Angeles broadens the entertainment-law connection. Those opportunities make a specific practice plan more useful than a general attraction to Southern California. Your time outside class should help you build the relationships and experience that support that plan.
