Mercer University School of Law is a private law school in Macon, Georgia, offering a three-year JD. Its curriculum emphasizes legal writing, practical skills, professional responsibility, and advocacy, with a relatively small entering class.
This guide walks you through how to get into Mercer Law.

1. Mercer Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Mercer Law Class of 2029:
- LSAT: 75th: 161 | Median: 159 | 25th: 156
- GPA: 75th: 3.80 | Median: 3.63 | 25th: 3.36
Mercer Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 160 | Median: 157 | 25th: 155
- GPA: 75th: 3.80 | Median: 3.62 | 25th: 3.30
The entering class grew from 152 students in 2025 to 157 in 2026. The LSAT median increased two points, while the GPA median moved only slightly. Both lower quartiles rose. That makes an old 157-median strategy a poor starting point for the current application.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Mercer Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
Mercer requires a personal statement.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
Woodruff Scholarship essay (optional)
The separate Woodruff application requires a one- to two-page typed essay. Its question concerns the tension between lawyers' honesty obligations and the use of deceptive testers in investigations, including employment or housing discrimination. Address whether the conduct should be allowed, where you would draw the line, and why.
Submit the scholarship application and complete JD application by December 15.
For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Mercer Law Resume Requirements
Submit a one- to two-page resume with your education, professional experience, and contact information. Mercer also permits relevant service, honors, skills, and interests.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Mercer Law Letters of Recommendation
Mercer requires two letters of recommendation, preferably from university professors. Letters should address your character, intelligence, and aptitude for legal study.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Mercer Law Interview Process
Mercer's Special Consideration program for qualifying Mercer undergraduates includes a guaranteed interview. Prospective students can also speak with admissions staff during campus visits and one-on-one virtual tours.
6. Mercer Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing Policy
Mercer accepts the LSAT or GRE. The GRE route requires applicants not to have taken or registered for the LSAT and to submit all GRE scores from the preceding five years. LSAT scores are valid for five years, and the June LSAT is accepted. The LSAT score and writing sample must arrive before review.
If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Application Dates and Fees
- Application opens: September 1
- Woodruff Scholarship and completed JD application: December 15
- Priority application deadline: January 15
- Final application deadline: June 1
- Application fee: None
Admission and scholarship decisions begin in early fall. The Woodruff deadline precedes the general priority date, so applicants pursuing that award need their test results, recommendations, and separate scholarship essay ready together.
For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?.
Program Formats
The JD is a full-time, three-year program with fall entry. Mercer's undergraduate Special Consideration and accelerated 3+3 pathways serve eligible Mercer students; they are distinct from a binding early decision commitment. The 3+3 pathway combines the final undergraduate year with the first year of law school.
7. Mercer Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Tuition and Fees
For 2026-2027, tuition is $45,902, with $500 in fees. The nine-month cost of attendance for a new borrower is $68,550, including living, book, and loan-fee allowances. Health insurance is outside that budget; qualifying coverage permits opting out of the university plan.
Merit Scholarships
Accepted applicants receive automatic consideration for general merit scholarships, renewable with good academic standing. Mercer also offers Public Interest Fellowship stipends for eligible summer work by first- and second-year students.
Woodruff Scholarship
Four incoming students receive full tuition plus a $5,000 annual stipend for three years. A separate application is required, including the essay on honesty and deceptive investigative methods. Renewal requires good academic standing. The December 15 deadline applies to both the scholarship application and completed JD application.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Mercer Law Joint Degree Programs
Mercer's joint business degree combines the law school's professional curriculum with graduate management study:
- JD/MBA: Offered with the Stetson-Hatcher School of Business, the program can be completed in as few as three years. Applicants must gain admission to each school separately. MBA classes meet in the evening, and business-school courses carry additional tuition.
Both degrees are withheld until all joint-program requirements are complete. Plan the evening business courses alongside the required law curriculum, rather than treating the MBA as a set of optional electives.
9. Mercer Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Mercer's Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 90.1%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 15.5%
- Federal clerkships: 1.4%
- Public service (including government): 19.0%
Georgia is by far the largest employment destination, with Florida and New York a distant second and third. The results support treating Mercer primarily as a route into regional practice, including firms, government, and public interest work. Larger-firm employment is a real outcome, but it is not the typical one. Evaluate the price against the work and market you actually want, rather than assuming a Georgia degree automatically produces an Atlanta BigLaw offer.
10. Mercer Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Legal writing, research, and drafting: The Legal Writing Certificate adds research, drafting, a seminar, a portfolio, and two semesters of writing groups. Groups have no more than six students. Students apply in their third semester after passing Legal Writing I and II.
Ethics and professional identity: The Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism connects the Woodruff Curriculum with lawyers and judges. The required Legal Profession course and later Law of Lawyering course make professional judgment an ongoing subject rather than a single graduation requirement.
Advocacy and dispute resolution: The curriculum includes appellate writing, client interviewing and counseling, and a third-year dispute-resolution workshop. The Mercer Advocacy Council and competition program give interested students additional settings in which to develop oral advocacy and case preparation.
Business practice: The JD/MBA and Corporate Counsel Externship provide different ways to explore business-related work. One adds formal management education; the other places students with practicing lawyers in legal departments. Choose based on the skills you need rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
11. Mercer Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
Mercer's clinical courses give students supervised responsibility for real client matters:
- Domestic Violence Clinic: Students interview clients, investigate facts, negotiate, and prepare protective-order cases in Bibb County Superior Court. The course spans two semesters.
- Habeas Project: Students assist indigent clients in post-conviction matters through investigation, client visits, case planning, briefs, and advocacy in Georgia courts.
- Low Income Tax Clinic: Students help clients with IRS controversies, including interviewing, counseling, factual development, and negotiation, with potential work in Tax Court.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
The Public Defender Externship is a hybrid clinic combining supervised criminal-defense work with a seminar. The Judicial Externship develops research and writing through work for judges and observation of proceedings. The Corporate Counsel Externship combines in-house work with a skills course; participating organizations have included Aflac, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, FedEx, and Piedmont Healthcare. Students must secure an eligible corporate position.
Service outside coursework includes Student Bar Association community projects and the Counselor's Cupboard food pantry. These opportunities connect the school's professionalism emphasis to client service and support for classmates.
12. Mercer Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Patrick Longan: William Augustus Bootle Chair in Professionalism and Ethics and director of the Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism. His Inside the Legal Profession series brings lawyers and judges into required first-year programming.
- Bonnie Carlson: Associate Professor of Law and director of the Domestic Violence Clinic. Her teaching connects domestic-violence law with supervised protective-order representation in Bibb County Superior Court.
- Meagan Hurley: Associate Professor of Law and director of the Habeas Project. Her work centers on post-conviction advocacy for indigent clients in Georgia courts.
- Sarah Gerwig: Professor of Law and director of the Public Defender Externship. She combines criminal-defense teaching with supervised student representation.
Journals
- Mercer Law Review: Publishes scholarship and annual surveys of Georgia and Eleventh Circuit law.
- Journal of Southern Legal History: Produced with the Georgia Legal History Foundation, covering the South's legal institutions and culture.
13. Mercer Law Culture and Student Life
Mercer's law school sits on Coleman Hill in Macon, separate from the university's main undergraduate campus. The entering 2026 class has 157 students. A smaller class can make repeated interaction easier, but you still have to build relationships through class participation, organizations, and shared work.
The Student Bar Association, advocacy program, and journals provide several ways to contribute. The Counselor's Cupboard is a concrete example of students supporting one another. Macon is the setting for daily life and local court work; Atlanta is a separate market to pursue, not a substitute description of the campus.
