1. Widener Commonwealth Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Widener Commonwealth Law Class of 2029:
- LSAT: 75th: 153 | Median: 149 | 25th: 147
- GPA: 75th: 3.62 | Median: 3.36 | 25th: 3.02
Widener Commonwealth Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 153 | Median: 150 | 25th: 147
- GPA: 75th: 3.64 | Median: 3.33 | 25th: 2.98
The fall 2026 profile, dated August 19, reports 203 entering students, up from 159 in fall 2025. The LSAT median declined one point while the GPA median increased by 0.03. Both sets combine divisions.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Widener Commonwealth Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
Submit a two- to three-page, double-spaced personal statement.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
Diversity Statement (optional)
The school's instructions:
“Diversity Statement explaining any characteristics that would allow the applicant to uniquely contribute to the Widener Law Commonwealth community.”
Diversity is broadly defined.
For more on how to write a diversity or perspective statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.
For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)
Required disclosures include prior JD or conditional-admission enrollment, less-than-honorable military separation, and affirmative character-and-fitness responses. Prior law enrollment also requires a transcript and standing letter. An addendum is encouraged for a test-score spread exceeding five points.
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Widener Commonwealth Law Resume Requirements
A one-page resume is required. Prioritize education, work, service, and leadership with dates and specific responsibilities. Cut repetition rather than shrinking the document into an unreadable page.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Widener Commonwealth Law Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required; the committee reviews up to three. Current undergraduate or graduate students should include at least one academic letter. Commonwealth recommends letters less than two years old, from people who can discuss your actual performance.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Widener Commonwealth Law Interview Process
Commonwealth offers campus tours, open houses, and admissions information sessions. Request a tour at least 72 hours in advance; the admissions office confirms arrangements by email. Tours generally last about 30 minutes and are unavailable during final examinations or school closures.
6. Widener Commonwealth Law Deadlines and Early Decision
Testing Policy
Commonwealth accepts the LSAT with its writing sample or the GRE, with scores less than five years old. Its Legal Scholars Program permits qualifying Widener undergraduates to apply without an LSAT; applicants who have taken the LSAT are ineligible for that route.
If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Application Dates and Fees
- Applications Open: October 1, 2026.
- Binding Early Decision: January 1, 2027; decision by February 15.
- Nonbinding Early Action: February 1, 2027; decision by March 1.
- Early Admission and Express Programs: April 1, 2027, for eligible partner-college applicants; several partner 3+3 programs instead require application by March 31 of junior year.
- Trial Admissions Consideration: April 15, 2027.
- Priority Deadline: May 1, 2027.
- Final Deadline: July 1, 2027.
- Application Fee: $60, waived for applications submitted on or before May 1.
Decision Options
Early Decision admits must withdraw other pending law-school applications and pay a nonrefundable deposit. Early Decision applicants receive full-tuition scholarship consideration. Early Action preserves your ability to compare offers. Regular decisions typically take four to six weeks after completion. Admitted students pay two nonrefundable $400 deposits on the dates in their acceptance letters.
For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?
Program Formats
The JD takes three years full-time or four in the extended day/evening division. Trial Admissions Program participation is by invitation; successful participants enter part-time study. Previously academically dismissed applicants ordinarily need two years between dismissal and matriculation. Final transcripts are due September 30; missing them blocks spring registration and may lead to revoked admission and disenrollment.
7. Widener Commonwealth Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships and Need-Based Aid
All admitted applicants receive scholarship consideration. Entering merit awards range from $5,000 to full tuition, cover tuition only, and renew while the student maintains good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.00. Compare the renewable award with the full cost, not tuition alone.
Endowed opportunities include the Captain Shane Mahaffee Scholarship for Excellence and Michael J. Aiello Scholarship. Some require separate applications. The FAFSA establishes financial need for relevant awards; a merit offer does not replace the aid process.
Cost of Attendance
The 2026-27 first-year budget uses $1,930 per credit: $57,900 for 30 full-time credits and $38,600 for 20 extended-division credits. The first-year handout estimates nine-month off-campus attendance costs of $90,470 and $70,424, respectively. A different course load changes the tuition calculation.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Widener Commonwealth Law Joint Degrees
The JD/Online MBA, offered with Widener University's School of Business Administration, takes four years full-time or five years part-time. Admission to each program is separate. Approved coursework can count for up to nine credits in each direction, reducing the combined requirements by 18 credits.
Current JD students applying to the MBA need at least a 2.70 cumulative GPA and must apply by the third full-time or fourth part-time semester. This is a graduate dual degree, distinct from the school's undergraduate 3+3 admission partnerships.
9. Widener Commonwealth Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Widener Commonwealth Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 77.1%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 6.7%
- Federal clerkships: 0.0%
- Public service (including government): 21.9%
Pennsylvania was by far the largest employment destination. Small firms, government, and state judicial clerkships were more prominent than large-firm or federal-clerkship placements. Commonwealth is therefore a more natural fit for applicants building a Pennsylvania practice plan than for those relying on a national BigLaw outcome. Evaluate the scholarship against that likely market rather than against the highest salary a law graduate could theoretically earn.
10. Widener Commonwealth Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Government and Administrative Law: The Law and Government Institute connects coursework with the work of legislatures and agencies. Its certificate options include Administrative/Constitutional Law and Legislation & Public Policy, giving students a structured way to study how lawyers work inside public institutions.
Environmental Law: The Environmental Law and Sustainability Center pairs an Environmental Law Certificate with projects such as municipal sustainability ordinances and student work for the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Environmental and Energy Law Section. That combination connects doctrinal study with practical legal writing.
Business Advising: The Business Law Advising Program focuses on small and midsize enterprises. Students study organization, finance, tax, employment, and intellectual property, with a transactional-skills requirement. The Lawyers for the Arts partnership provides another connection to clients whose legal needs cross several subjects.
Community-Based Legal Work: The Center for Equity and Justice offers paid student fellowships supporting projects such as its Pathway Program and Enhanced Community Policing Project. Students interested in access to legal education or community-focused research can connect those interests to defined work rather than a general statement about service.
11. Widener Commonwealth Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
The Central Pennsylvania Law Clinic handles administrative, consumer, elder, and family-law matters. Students interview clients, maintain files, communicate with opposing counsel, negotiate, and undertake supervised court representation.
Referrals come from organizations including MidPenn Legal Services, the Dauphin County Area Agency on Aging, and the YWCA Domestic Violence Clinic. The work connects students with clients who need assistance and with the local attorneys and organizations serving them.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
Externships provide one to four credits at 50 placement hours per credit, with an accompanying class component. Examples of past placements include the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center, Carbon County Public Defender's Office, and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Judicial, clinical, and business-advising options expose students to different kinds of legal work.
The Public Interest Initiative tracks unpaid, noncredit service. Students completing at least 60 qualifying pro bono hours can receive commencement recognition. Keep that distinction clear: an externship earns academic credit, while this initiative recognizes volunteer work outside the credit-bearing curriculum.
12. Widener Commonwealth Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Jill E. Family: Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development. Her immigration and administrative-law scholarship informs her role as Law and Government Institute faculty advisor; she has chaired the ABA's administrative-law section.
- Chiara Pappalardo: Assistant Professor and Environmental Law and Sustainability Center co-director. Her energy, property, and climate-law work draws on experience with the Georgetown Climate Center and legal practice in Italy.
- andré douglas pond cummings: Dean and Professor of Law. His corporate-justice and sports-and-entertainment scholarship follows transactional practice at Kirkland & Ellis and federal appellate clerkship experience.
- Mary Catherine Scott: Associate Clinical Professor and Central Pennsylvania Law Clinic director. Her elder-law and access-to-justice work includes service with Pennsylvania's Advisory Council of Elder Justice in the Courts.
Journals
- Widener Commonwealth Law Review: Student-edited scholarship across major legal fields, including an annual survey examining Pennsylvania administrative-law decisions.
13. Widener Commonwealth Law Culture and Student Life
Commonwealth combines a state-capital location with full-time and extended day/evening study. The fall 2026 entering class spans ages 20 to 70 and includes graduates of 118 colleges. That range gives applicants with substantial work experience a concrete reason to look beyond a conventional three-year schedule.
Harrisburg connects that community to Pennsylvania agencies, legislative offices, and courts. The Central Pennsylvania Law Clinic's referrals from MidPenn Legal Services and local organizations add direct client contact. The Student Bar Association and Black Law Students Association provide community beyond those academic and professional settings.
