1. Case Western Reserve Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics

Case Western Reserve Law Class of 2028:

  • LSAT: 75th: 164 | Median: 162 | 25th: 156
  • GPA: 75th: 3.89 | Median: 3.76 | 25th: 3.51

Case Western Reserve Law Class of 2027:

  • LSAT: 75th: 162 | Median: 160 | 25th: 156
  • GPA: 75th: 3.85 | Median: 3.70 | 25th: 3.45

From the 2024 to the 2025 entering cohort, combined enrollment fell from 198 to 180. The LSAT median rose from 160 to 162, with its quartile range widening from 156-162 to 156-164. The GPA median rose from 3.70 to 3.76, with its quartile range shifting from 3.45-3.85 to 3.51-3.89. These are all-student figures. The 2025 cohort includes both formats; its online part-time LSAT median was 164, compared with 161 for full-time students. The combined class had 180 students, including 35 part-time entrants.

Aim to be at or above at least one median for the overall entering class, a 162 LSAT or 3.76 GPA, to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.

For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.

2. Case Western Reserve Law Application Essays

Personal Statement (required)

CWRU asks for a personal statement covering academic achievements, work experience, special interests, honors, community involvement, and other information that helps the committee evaluate you.

For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.

Optional Essays

CWRU encourages optional essays.

For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.

Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)

CWRU requires disclosure of dismissed, sealed, and expunged proceedings, including juvenile matters. Its instructions also cover formal or informal academic, employment, licensing, and military proceedings. Update the application when responsive circumstances change.

I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.

3. Case Western Reserve Law Resume Requirements

CWRU requires a resume with the application. Include your education, employment, activities, and significant responsibilities without duplicating the personal statement's narrative.

For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.

4. Case Western Reserve Law Letters of Recommendation

CWRU requires two letters of recommendation, submitted through LSAC's Credential Assembly Service with the rest of your application materials.

For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).

5. Case Western Reserve Law Interview Process

An interview is not one of CWRU's required JD application components.

6. Case Western Reserve Law Deadlines and Early Decision

Testing Policy

CWRU accepts the LSAT, GRE, or JD-Next for both JD formats. Submit all valid LSAT and GRE scores; the school emphasizes the highest scores.

If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.

Application Dates and Fees

Electronic applications have no application fee.

The school's published annual schedule is:

  • September 15: Applications open.
  • November 30: On-campus binding early decision application, agreement, and $200 application deposit due.
  • December 20: Early decision notification.
  • January 15: Separate $400 early decision admission deposit due.
  • March 1: Regular decision priority deadline.
  • April 1: Final regular and online JD application deadline.

Early Decision

An early decision admit must withdraw other applications and enroll. Scholarship information arrives before the January deposit deadline. Regular review begins in January and continues on a rolling basis. Aim to apply before February 1 for stronger scholarship consideration. CWRU's separate First Choice Option is a post-admission commitment with a single $500 deposit, not another early decision application round.

For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?

Program Formats

The Part-Time Online JD has no required campus residencies. Its 88-credit curriculum includes 12 experiential credits and concentrations in business, health, international law, and civil litigation. Apply through the same JD admissions process; binding early decision is limited to the on-campus program.

7. Case Western Reserve Law Scholarships and Financial Aid

Merit Scholarships

Applicants receive automatic consideration, with stronger scholarship consideration for applications before February 1. Awards renew with good academic standing and do not require study in the scholarship's named field.

Cost of Attendance

For 2026-2027, full-time fall-and-spring tuition is $66,600, with $960 in fees, a $25,640 living allowance, and $2,064 for books. Adding the proposed, waivable $4,220 medical plan gives a $99,484 budget before optional fitness charges and loan fees. Online tuition is $2,775 per credit.

Sugarman Business Law Scholarships

These awards recognize business-law interests and ethical commercial leadership.

Gerber Law-Medicine Fellows

This fellowship supports students interested in the intersection of law and medicine.

Story IP Fellows

This fellowship recognizes promise in intellectual property. Separate Fessenden Scholarships address law and technology, while Webster Scholarships focus on law and the arts.

Stephanie Tubbs Jones Public Interest Law Scholarships

These awards recognize commitment to public service and advocacy. Applicants seeking loans complete the financial-aid process separately.

For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.

8. Case Western Reserve Law Joint Degree Programs

CWRU's university partners offer several JD combinations:

  • JD/MPH: Public health through the School of Medicine, generally four years.
  • JD/MSW: Social work through the Mandel School.
  • JD/MNO: Nonprofit organizations through the Mandel School, four years.
  • JD/MA in Bioethics and Medical Humanities: Through the School of Medicine.
  • JD/MS in Biochemistry: Through the School of Medicine.
  • JD/MD: With the School of Medicine.
  • JD/MA in History, Political Science, or Military Ethics: With the corresponding university departments.

Admission to both programs is required. Degree sequencing and shared credits differ by program; the JD/MPH, for example, permits up to 12 MPH credits toward the law degree. Third-year JD/LLM partners include Middlesex University, Comillas Pontifical University, Paris Dauphine University, Lille Catholic University, and Dalhousie University.

9. Case Western Reserve Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)

Case Western Reserve Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):

  • Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 75.4%
  • BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 27.5%
  • Federal clerkships: 2.8%
  • Public service (including government): 15.5%

Ohio is the largest employment destination, followed by New York and Pennsylvania. Larger-firm practice is a meaningful part of CWRU's placement, while government, public-interest work, and smaller employers remain important paths. For a Cleveland or broader Ohio practice, weigh that employer access alongside your scholarship offer. For another market, connect your summer work and alumni relationships to the specific employers you hope to reach rather than relying on a specialty concentration alone.

10. Case Western Reserve Law Areas of Study and Specializations

Health Law: The Law-Medicine Center connects legal study with medicine, regulation, and bioethics. The health law concentration combines core courses, electives, a research paper, and a related capstone. Health Care Finance and Regulation provides a concrete starting point for applicants interested in how institutions deliver care.

Law, Technology and the Arts: The Spangenberg Center supports three concentration streams: Patent Law, Law and the Arts, and Fusion. Fusion brings law, business, and technology together around commercialization. The Intellectual Property Venture Clinic connects that coursework to entrepreneurs, emerging technologies, and the practical protection of new ideas.

International Law: The Frederick K. Cox International Law Center supports overseas placements and grants for qualifying travel and living expenses. The International Law Research Lab connects classroom work to live projects. Students can pursue a concentration and explore concurrent overseas JD/LLM study.

Environmental Law: The Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law supports scholarship and experiential opportunities. International Environmental Law, the Environmental Law Clinic, and placements with environmental organizations offer different ways to connect regulatory study with client work, public health, and resource-related legal questions.

11. Case Western Reserve Law Clinics and Experiential Learning

The Milton and Charlotte Kramer Law Clinic gives students supervised responsibility for clients. Its offerings include:

  • Appellate Litigation Clinic: Research records, draft briefs, and prepare criminal or civil appeals.
  • Community Development Clinic: Help organizations with formation, governance, contracts, and transactions.
  • Criminal Justice Clinic: Represent clients in misdemeanor matters in local courts.
  • Environmental Law Clinic: Work on environmental, energy, and environmental-justice matters.
  • Dr. Frank Stanton First Amendment Clinic: Handle speech and civil-rights litigation.
  • Health Law Clinic: Address housing, benefits, planning documents, and other civil needs affecting health.
  • Human Trafficking Law Clinic: Combine legal representation with interdisciplinary social-work support.
  • Immigration Clinic: Handle asylum, removal, citizenship, and related proceedings.
  • Intellectual Property Venture Clinic: Work on patent, trademark, and business-development matters.
  • Second Chance Reentry Clinic: Assist with record sealing, custody, and other barriers to reentry.

Pro Bono and Experiential Learning

The JD requires at least 12 experiential credits, including a final-year capstone. First-year client work begins through the LLEAP skills sequence. Externship sites include Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, the Federal Public Defender, and Cuyahoga County government. These placements put different practice settings within reach, from institutional health care to public defense.

12. Case Western Reserve Law Notable Faculty and Journals

13. Case Western Reserve Law Culture and Student Life

CWRU's student community includes journals, advocacy teams, and organizations such as the Student Health Law Association, Student Intellectual Property Law Association, and Street Law. The student-faculty band, Razing the Bar, adds an unusual shared activity outside the classroom. The on-campus experience centers on these repeated academic and social connections.

University Circle puts the law school within Cleveland's university and cultural district. For applicants interested in health care, local courts, or institutional clients, Cleveland is also part of the professional education. Online students have a different daily experience, so choose that format for the schedule and learning environment you can sustain.
