UVA Law is known for its collegial culture, top-notch faculty, and deep ties to both public service and biglaw. It receives nearly 6,000 applications each cycle and admits fewer than 700 students, making it highly selective relative to its size. Its relatively small class size, Southern hospitality, and emphasis on community contribute to a uniquely supportive academic environment that many students describe as “happy law school.”
UVA emphasizes professionalism, leadership, and collaboration. Its alumni network is deeply loyal and active, and its support for clerkships ranks among the very best. If you’re applying, you’ll need to show maturity, motivation, and alignment with UVA’s values.
This guide walks you through how to get into UVA Law.
Step 1: Know the Numbers
UVA Law School Class of 2027:
GPA: 25th percentile: 3.78 | Median: 3.96 | 75th percentile: 4.00
LSAT: 25th percentile: 167 | Median: 172 | 75th percentile: 174
UVA considers applicants holistically, but being at or above one median will significantly strengthen your chances. Both GPA and LSAT medians are highly competitive.
Step 2: Personal Statement
UVA requires a personal statement as part of your application. It should be a professional, reflective, and well-written narrative that gives the admissions committee insight into who you are and why you want to pursue law.
Prompt: Please prepare a two-page, double-spaced personal statement. We are particularly interested in your motivation and preparation for the study of law, as well as any circumstances you believe are relevant to the evaluation of your credentials.
Length: 2 pages, double-spaced, 12pt font
Recommended Structure:
- Begin in a real-world, law-relevant experience
- Zoom out with reflection
- Bridge into law
- Close with forward-looking clarity
What UVA Values:
- Community orientation and leadership
- Intellectual clarity and professionalism
- Ethical thinking and grounded ambition
Avoid:
- Childhood anecdotes
- Broad statements about justice
- Résumé summaries in paragraph form

Step 3: Experience & Interests Section (Short Answer Questions)
This section includes required and optional short-answer prompts.
- Resilience, Integrity, and Maturity (Required — 3000 characters max)
Prompt: Law school and the practice of law are both rewarding and challenging. Among the qualities it takes to succeed in both are resilience, integrity, empathy, diligence, maturity, and the ability to engage across differences. Please describe how you have developed, cultivated, and/or exhibited one or more of these qualities in your life. In your discussion, feel free to draw upon any past experience or part of your background, including but not limited to those related to your community, upbringing, educational environment, race, gender, or other aspects of your background that are important to you.
- Professional Contributions (Optional — 1500 characters max)
Prompt: We understand that professional resumes do not necessarily reflect every major responsibility or position a candidate has ever held. We invite you to further expand upon your work history, familial obligations, or other significant contributions to your household (including part-time jobs or roles assumed while attending high school and/or college).
- Hobbies and Interests (Required — 200 characters max)
Prompt: Please describe your interests and hobbies.
- Geographic Preference (Optional — 200 characters max)
Prompt: Some applicants know where they want to begin their legal practice. If you have such specific geographic preferences, please identify them.
Step 4: Optional Addenda (Including Why UVA)
UVA allows for addenda if you have relevant context not covered elsewhere. This may include:
Why UVA Law (Optional)

- Being a descendant of ancestors who labored at UVA
- Participation in other UVA programs
- Having a specific tie to the Charlottesville area
Suggested Length: 1–2 pages, double-spaced, 12pt font
Other addenda may address:
- Character & Fitness disclosures
- Context for test scores or GPA trends
All addenda should be:
- Clearly labeled
- Relevant and necessary—not restating content found elsewhere
Step 5: Resume Tips
Length: 1–2 pages
Use a clean, professional format with a focus on:
- Action → What you did → Why it mattered
- Clarity, impact, and leadership
- Academic and professional substance
Include:
- Research, writing, or legal-adjacent experience
- Leadership, service, and community roles
- Honors, awards, and publications (if relevant)
Step 6: Letters of Recommendation
Requirements: Two letters
Advice:
- At least one academic letter is preferred
- Choose writers who can speak to your intellectual ability, character, and work ethic
Avoid:
- Prestige without insight
- Generic letters from people who don’t know your work well
Step 7: Nail the Logistics
Application Components
- Personal Statement
- Resume
- 2 Letters of Recommendation
- LSAT or GRE
- Transcripts
- Experience & Interests Short Answers (2 required, 2 optional)

Early Decision
UVA offers a binding Early Decision (ED) program.
- Deadline: All application materials must be submitted by March 1, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. ET sharp. Submitting even one minute later means you won’t be considered ED.
- Decision Timeline: Applicants receive a decision within 21 business days of their file being marked complete.
- Binding Commitment: If admitted through ED, you must immediately withdraw all other law school applications and commit to enrolling at UVA.
Step 8: Interview
UVA requires an interview for admission.
The interview is short, conversational, and relatively low-pressure—but it’s a mandatory step for serious consideration. Most admitted students report that as long as you’re prepared, respectful, and sincere, the interview feels like a formality.
