The University of Alabama School of Law in Tuscaloosa combines a small entering class with substantial clinical training. Its strengths include public interest law, governmental affairs, constitutional law, and entrepreneurship.

1. Alabama Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Alabama Law Class of 2029:
- LSAT: Median: 169
- GPA: Median: 3.98
Alabama Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 168 | Median: 167 | 25th: 161
- GPA: 75th: 4.05 | Median: 3.97 | 25th: 3.76
The fall 2026 class raised the LSAT median by two points and the GPA median by 0.01. Enrollment fell from 140 in fall 2025 to 117 in fall 2026.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Alabama Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
Alabama's prompt is open-ended. Write two to three double-spaced pages in at least 11-point font. The committee welcomes experiences that explain your motivation, development, leadership, service, or response to obstacles.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
For more on discussing your response to obstacles within this personal statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.
Interest in Alabama
Alabama asks nonresident applicants to explain their interest in the school and any relevant ties.
For more on how to write a Why X essay, see my Why X Essay Guide.
For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)
An addendum can explain a significant score difference or academic disruption.
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Alabama Law Resume Requirements
A resume is required. Include at least your last three full-time positions, including summer employment, along with education and relevant activities.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Alabama Law Letters of Recommendation
The standard application requires at least one letter of recommendation through CAS. Academic recommendations can help explain undergraduate performance. Alabama Scholars and the 503 Alternative Admissions Program do not require recommendations.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Alabama Law Interview Process
Alabama does not conduct formal admissions interviews as part of its standard first-year JD application process.
6. Alabama Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing: LSAT and GRE scores are valid for five years. A valid LSAT must be submitted and takes priority; GRE-only applicants submit all GRE scores from the last five years. If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Regular admission: Alabama reviews applications on a rolling basis. Its annual schedule opens in September and runs through August 1, with the June LSAT accepted for that fall. The fee is $40. A pending LSAT registration holds review unless you request earlier consideration in writing.
Alabama Scholars: This streamlined Fall 2027 route serves qualifying seniors and graduates of eighteen specified Alabama institutions with at least a 3.98 CAS GPA, resident tuition status, and an LSAT. It waives recommendations and offers approximately twenty-business-day review.
503 Alternative Admissions: Fall 2027 eligibility requires senior standing and good standing at UA Tuscaloosa, UAB, UAH, or Auburn; graduation August 15, 2026-August 2, 2027; at least a 3.98 CAS GPA after at least six qualifying full-time fall/spring semesters; and an original-administration ACT/SAT percentile of at least 85. Each qualifying semester requires at least twelve earned credits. CAS is required. A valid LSAT, registering for or taking the LSAT, or assigning/submitting GRE scores will withdraw the application and/or offer and move it to regular review. The September 23, 2026 first-wave deadline has passed; additional waves depend on remaining capacity.
7. Alabama Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Merit Scholarships
Alabama automatically considers applicants for merit scholarships across admission routes, without a separate application. Submit the FAFSA for need-based loan consideration. Merit awards carry no academic renewal condition beyond good standing.
Cost of Attendance
For 2026-27, annual tuition is $25,320 for residents and $49,710 for nonresidents. The published first- and second-year attendance budgets are $49,848 for residents and $75,150 for nonresidents. Third-year budgets rise to $51,048 for residents and $76,350 for nonresidents. Compare the full budget, not tuition alone, when assessing the value of an award.
Public Interest Summer Grant Program
The Public Interest Summer Grant Program provides separate funding for unpaid internships with public-interest organizations. Students apply in the spring, after identifying a summer opportunity. It is a different funding decision from the incoming merit award.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Alabama Law Joint Degrees
Alabama coordinates legal study with business, engineering, and political science programs.
- JD/MBA: The four-year program with the Manderson Graduate School of Business combines legal study with management training. It fits applicants interested in business counseling, transactions, or leadership roles requiring both disciplines.
- JD/MS in Civil Engineering: The College of Engineering partnership permits shared credit. The coursework-based arrangement requires at least 96 combined credits; the thesis route has different sharing limits. Students complete the first-year law curriculum before integrating the programs.
- JD/MA, JD/PhD, or JD/MPA: The Department of Political Science partnership supports political science and public-administration study. Students gain admission to each program separately, spend the first year in law and at least one year exclusively in graduate study, then combine coursework.
These combinations connect naturally to Alabama's governmental-affairs, business, and infrastructure-related opportunities. Build the degree plan around the professional problem you want to work on.
9. Alabama Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Alabama Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 93.2%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 29.5%
- Federal clerkships: 12.3%
- Public service (including government): 15.1%
Alabama is the dominant employment destination, followed by Georgia and Tennessee. The federal-clerkship share is a distinctive part of the school's results, while firms of different sizes provide additional paths into practice. For applicants focused on the Southeast, the relevant comparison is the combination of regional placement, clerkships, and net cost.
10. Alabama Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Governmental Affairs: The Certificate in Governmental Affairs combines administrative and legislative coursework with a qualifying policy-development externship. The Washington DC Externship adds full-time experience and a Legislative and Political Writing course, connecting classroom analysis to institutional work.
Public Interest Law: The Public Interest Institute supports a certificate, volunteer projects, summer funding, and a public-interest career fair. Students can connect that structure to supervised representation in clinics and sustained work with communities facing barriers to legal assistance.
Entrepreneurship and Business Law: The Entrepreneurship & Nonprofit Clinic gives students experience with entity formation, contracts, and organizational governance. The Manderson JD/MBA adds a business-school route for students whose interests extend from legal counseling into management and commercial decision-making.
International and Comparative Law: The certificate combines Public International Law, International Business Transactions, additional electives, and approved international study. It provides an organized route for students interested in cross-border transactions, comparative institutions, and the relationship between domestic and international legal systems.
Constitutional and Technology Law: The Program on Constitutional Studies supports sustained work on public-law questions. The AI Legal Studies Initiative adds research on autonomous systems, institutional decision-making, and private law, creating distinct opportunities to study how new technologies interact with existing legal structures.
11. Alabama Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
Alabama offers supervised clinical work to second- and third-year students, with an opportunity for every interested student to take at least one clinic.
- Children's Rights Clinic: Advocate for court-involved young people with disabilities through school, detention, and legal-system work.
- Entrepreneurship & Nonprofit Clinic: Help clients form entities, draft contracts, address governance, and prepare nonprofit tax-exemption applications.
- Appellate Litigation Clinic: Develop appellate arguments through research, briefing, and oral advocacy.
- Civil Law Clinic: Represent clients in housing, consumer, employment, contract, and related civil matters.
- Criminal Defense Clinic: Represent clients facing misdemeanor and municipal charges and assist with related relief, including expungements.
- Domestic Violence Law Clinic: Help survivors pursue protection orders and resolve custody, support, housing, and other civil problems.
- Mediation Law Clinic: Mediate family-court disputes involving divorce, support, visitation, and post-divorce changes.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning

Projects include Free Legal Advice Clinic intake and Habitat for Humanity wills work. Judicial, government, and corporate externships supplement clinics. Past Washington DC placements include the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, and Securities and Exchange Commission.

13. Alabama Law Culture and Student Life
Alabama's fall 2026 entering class included 117 students from twenty-two states and forty-three undergraduate institutions. Orientation brought that group together through introductory coursework and a visit to Montgomery's courts and the Legacy Museum. The scale makes a shared first-year experience a meaningful part of the school.
Tuscaloosa also gives students direct contact with community legal needs through clinics and public-service projects. The Public Interest Student Board connects that work to student life, while the broader university supplies the setting of a large public campus. Regional practice and opportunities beyond Alabama both remain part of the professional picture.
