California Western School of Law is based in downtown San Diego, with an evening division alongside its JD offerings. Its distinctive work includes wrongful convictions, community legal services, technology law, and business study.
This guide walks you through how to get into California Western Law.

1. California Western Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
California Western Law Class of 2029:
- LSAT: 75th: 160 | Median: 157 | 25th: 154
- GPA: 75th: 3.73 | Median: 3.54 | 25th: 3.19
California Western Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 158 | Median: 155 | 25th: 152
- GPA: 75th: 3.66 | Median: 3.50 | 25th: 3.16
The preliminary fall 2026 profile includes 241 entering students, compared with 242 in fall 2025. These schoolwide profiles include both JD divisions. Every LSAT quartile rose two points, and median GPA increased from 3.50 to 3.54.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. California Western Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
California Western requires a two- to three-page personal statement highlighting the experiences and qualities you would bring to law school. Its examples include professional experience, a career transition, internships, and work with underserved communities.
The school does not conduct personal interviews.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
Adversity Statement (optional)
Applicants whose background or life experiences adversely affected their academic performance are invited to explain those circumstances separately. The statement can address disadvantage, exclusion, traumatic events, or barriers, including how you responded and how the experience shaped you.
For more on how to write a diversity or perspective statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.
For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. California Western Law Resume Requirements
A resume is required. Include employment, internships, volunteer work, education, and leadership. Show the responsibilities you held and the work you completed, especially where your experience extends beyond the classroom.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. California Western Law Letters of Recommendation
California Western requires two letters of recommendation. Recommenders may come from academic, professional, internship, or mentoring relationships. Choose people who know your abilities through direct observation rather than relying on a title.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. California Western Law Interview Process
California Western does not conduct formal admissions interviews as part of the standard application process.
6. California Western Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing Policy
California Western accepts the LSAT, GRE, or JD-Next. Applicants educated outside the United States and Canada must submit the LSAT and/or GRE rather than relying on JD-Next alone.
If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Application Dates and Fees
- Applications: Open for fall 2027.
- Priority Deadline: April 1, 2027.
- Final Deadline: July 31, 2027.
- Recommended Final Test Timing: By June.
- Application Fee: No school application fee; CAS charges are separate.
Review is rolling, typically beginning in November. Decisions generally take four to six weeks after completion, with longer processing possible from January through April. The April deadline is a regular priority deadline, not a binding Early Decision commitment.
For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?.
Program Formats
The part-time evening JD uses six to eleven credits per semester, with classes four nights weekly from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Its minimum nine-semester sequence can extend into a fifth fall; summer study can accelerate completion. This is an evening classroom program, not an online JD.
7. California Western Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Merit Scholarships
Admitted applicants receive automatic consideration for most scholarships. Awards include the Justice Anthony Kennedy Scholarship, Trustees' Scholarship, Dean's Honor Scholarship, and Admissions Scholarship.
For entering students from fall 2026, these awards require a 2.85 cumulative GPA for renewal. Coverage generally applies to fall and spring, up to 90 units, with individual award terms controlling. The renewal condition matters: among 199 recipients entering in 2024-2025 with conditional scholarships, 126 had awards reduced or eliminated. Price the degree with that risk in mind, not just the first-year discount.
Need-Based Aid and Public-Interest Support
California Western supports merit- and need-based scholarships. FAFSA submission also supports consideration for federal aid, including need-based work-study positions on campus and with eligible legal employers.
The Adrianne Baker Loan Repayment Assistance Program serves qualifying nonprofit attorneys within ten years of graduation. Its policy requires more than $50,000 in certified law-school debt and at least twelve consecutive months of qualifying employment at 30 or more hours weekly. Government employees are excluded. Recipients must reapply annually; funding is limited to five award years and depends on available resources.
Cost of Attendance
For 2026-2027, full-time tuition and mandatory fees total $67,840 across fall and spring. The nine-month cost-of-attendance budget is $106,961, including living expenses and other allowances.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. California Western Law Joint Degrees
California Western offers a joint business degree with a separate university partner:
- JD/MBA: With San Diego State University's Fowler College of Business. The coordinated program takes approximately four years rather than the five ordinarily needed to complete both degrees separately.
Students apply separately to each school. The sequence begins with the first JD year, followed by the initial MBA coursework at SDSU; later study combines the two programs. Students apply to the MBA before completing their first law-school year. The degrees are awarded together, making this a coordinated academic commitment rather than simply taking business electives.
9. California Western Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
California Western Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 74.1%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 10.2%
- Federal clerkships: 1.5%
- Public service (including government): 14.6%
California overwhelmingly dominated employment destinations, with Florida representing a much smaller named market. Small firms accounted for a substantial share of placements. The results support a California-centered practice strategy; large-firm work and federal clerkships were minority outcomes. Evaluate the school's cost against the kinds of employers actually hiring its graduates.
10. California Western Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Business Law: The concentration connects business organizations, commercial subjects, and transactional practice with experiential work and substantial writing. Students can also pursue the separate SDSU JD/MBA, adding graduate management study to the law-school curriculum.
Criminal Justice: Coursework and advocacy training connect criminal procedure, evidence, and trial skills with supervised practice. The Innocence and Justice Clinic adds a postconviction setting, where factual investigation and legal research address claims of wrongful conviction.
Intellectual Property, Privacy, and Media Law: This concentration covers rights in creative work, technology, and information. New Media Rights and the Trademark Clinic provide distinct practice settings, connecting legal doctrine with advice to creators, entrepreneurs, and smaller organizations.
International Law: International and comparative coursework addresses cross-border legal questions, institutions, and human rights. The international law journal and Jessup moot court provide additional research, writing, and advocacy opportunities beyond ordinary classroom study.
Labor and Employment Law: The concentration covers workplace rights and obligations from the perspectives of employers, employees, unions, and government agencies. Faculty include Jessica Fink and Susan Bisom-Rapp, whose work addresses employment law and discrimination.
11. California Western Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
California Western has four clinics:
- California Western Innocence and Justice Clinic: Students screen cases, investigate factual claims, research legal issues, and help litigate postconviction matters under attorney supervision. The yearlong course combines a weekly seminar with work on claims of actual innocence.
- Community Law Project: Students work with volunteer attorneys serving low-income clients at community sites. They interview clients, identify legal issues, and participate in legal advice and education involving matters such as housing, employment, family law, and public benefits.
- New Media Rights: Students assist creators, journalists, entrepreneurs, and other clients with internet, intellectual-property, privacy, and media questions. Their work can include legal advice, policy research, and public educational resources explaining practical legal problems.
- Trademark Clinic: Students prepare and file trademark applications, respond to Office Actions, and communicate with examiners under supervision and provisional USPTO authorization. The clinic serves individuals and small businesses; its work does not include trademark litigation or opposition proceedings.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
Students must complete ten units of experiential coursework. The third-year externship program offers a semester of supervised practice, generally twenty to forty hours weekly, alongside a seminar. Placement settings include the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. District Court, the California Attorney General, and the San Diego District Attorney.
Separate Pro Bono and Public Service Honors Programs recognize fifty qualifying unpaid, noncredit service hours after the first year. These are voluntary honors programs, not a fifty-hour graduation requirement.
12. California Western Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Amy Kimpel: Professor of law, associate dean for experiential education, and executive director of the Innocence and Justice Clinic; a former federal defender whose work addresses criminal and immigration law.
- Brenda Simon: ProFlowers Professor of Internet Studies and professor of law, studying intellectual property and technology; formerly a Stanford fellow and an intellectual-property attorney at Fenwick & West.
- Art Neill: Associate clinical professor and founder and executive director of New Media Rights; an internet and media lawyer and coauthor of Don't Panic, a legal guide for businesses and creative professionals.
- William J. Aceves: Chief Justice Roger Traynor Professor of Law, teaching international and human-rights law; author of The Anatomy of Torture and counsel on human-rights amicus briefs in federal courts.
Journals
- California Western Law Review: The flagship student-edited journal, publishing scholarship across legal fields.
- California Western International Law Journal: Student-edited scholarship on international and comparative law, including business, immigration, criminal law, and human rights.
13. California Western Law Culture and Student Life
The campus sits at the northern end of downtown San Diego, near Little Italy and the city's courts and legal employers. Students use a central courtyard for studying and gathering, while journals, organizations, and clinical work create smaller communities within the school.
The evening division adds students whose schedules include employment and other responsibilities. Community legal service is visible through the Community Law Project and the school's honors programs. San Diego's waterfront and neighborhoods are part of student life, but the proximity to working lawyers and courts is the location's more direct professional advantage.
