How to Get Into Elon Law (2026-2027 Guide)

Elon University School of Law offers a 2.5-year full-time JD built around a substantial legal workplace residency. Greensboro is the established home of the program, with a new full-time Charlotte option beginning in fall 2027.

This guide walks you through how to get into Elon Law.

1. Elon Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics

Elon Law Class of 2028:

  • LSAT: 75th: 158 | Median: 155 | 25th: 152
  • GPA: 75th: 3.78 | Median: 3.55 | 25th: 3.29

Elon Law Class of 2027:

  • LSAT: 75th: 158 | Median: 154 | 25th: 151
  • GPA: 75th: 3.75 | Median: 3.44 | 25th: 3.15

These are full-time entering cohorts: fall 2026 and fall 2025, graduating in December 2028 and December 2027 on the standard 2.5-year schedule. The class decreased from 182 to 177. LSAT rose from 154 to 155 at the median and 151 to 152 at the lower quartile; the upper quartile stayed at 158. GPA rose at all three points, from 3.75/3.44/3.15 to 3.78/3.55/3.29. Charlotte Flex has a separate admissions profile.

Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.

For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.

2. Elon Law Application Essays

Personal Statement (required)

Submit no more than three double-spaced pages in 12-point Times New Roman. Address your reasons for pursuing law and applying to Elon, how your experience connects to your goals, and what you and the school can offer each other.

For more on addressing school interest within this personal statement, see my Why X Essay Guide.

For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.

Optional Statements and Addenda (optional)

Elon offers three optional subjects: a meaningful team experience and its lessons; academic or test performance that understates your ability; and a distinctive background or perspective. You may answer one or more, each in no more than two double-spaced pages in 12-point Times New Roman.

For more on how to write a diversity or perspective statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.

Campus-Preference Explanation (required for full-time applicants)

Full-time applicants also give a brief campus-preference explanation.

For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.

Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)

Character-and-fitness disclosures require a separate explanation, using the specified double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman format. State what happened, the outcome, and subsequent developments directly.

I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.

3. Elon Law Resume Requirements

A resume is required, capped at two pages. Include education, employment, service, leadership, and accomplishments, with clear dates and specific responsibilities. Complete the application’s corresponding questions too; the attachment does not replace them.

For an experiential program, evidence of reliability matters more than inflated titles. Show what you produced, who depended on you, and how your responsibilities developed.

For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.

4. Elon Law Letters of Recommendation

Submit two recommendations through CAS; Elon accepts a maximum of three. Academic and professional recommenders should address your potential as a law student.

A professor who can discuss your revision process is more useful than a prestigious acquaintance. A third letter earns its place only by adding a different, concrete perspective.

For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).

5. Elon Law Interview Process

Elon may invite competitive applicants to interview. An invitation is not a routine requirement for every applicant. Prepare a clear explanation of your interest in law, your program and campus choice, and an example of learning through responsibility.

Advocacy, Business, and Leadership Fellows finalists have separate faculty interviews. Those conversations should connect your actual experience to the fellowship’s work, not just to the scholarship.

6. Elon Law Deadlines and Decision Options

Testing Policy

Elon accepts the LSAT or GRE, with scores no more than five years old. Applicants with an LSAT must submit it; Elon treats that as the primary score. JD-Next may supplement an application, not replace either accepted admission test.

If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.

Application Dates and Fees

  • Fall 2027 applications opened: September 1, 2026.
  • Regular decision: Rolling, with a July 15, 2027 deadline.
  • Application fee: None.
  • Binding early decision: Complete your application by December 7, 2026, for the full-time Greensboro program only. Decisions arrive in early January. Admitted students must withdraw other pending applications, submit no new ones, and pay a $900 nonrefundable, tuition-creditable deposit by January 31, 2027. Applicants also agree not to apply early decision elsewhere during the cycle.

Charlotte full-time, no-campus-preference, and Flex applicants use regular decision. Full-time campus preferences are not guaranteed; placement depends on capacity, and later relocation requires approval. Do not commit to Greensboro through early decision while planning on an automatic Charlotte move.

For a full breakdown of early decision strategy, see Should You Apply Early Decision to Law School?

7. Elon Law Scholarships and Financial Aid

Merit Scholarships

All admitted applicants receive automatic consideration for merit and endowed scholarships, including Presidential and Dean’s Scholars awards. Renewal depends on the academic conditions in the award letter. The 2025 ABA report lists 61 conditional-scholarship entrants for 2024–25, with none reduced or eliminated. That outcome does not remove the conditions.

Named Fellowships

Advocacy, Business, and Leadership Fellows require separate applications, resumes, and essays. Round I opens January 15, 2027, for incoming full-time students. Benefits include additional scholarship support and funded summer experience. Paul D. Coverdell Fellowships serve returned Peace Corps volunteers through a separate selection process. Do not reuse a prior-year fellowship form as though its dates govern this cycle.

Tuition and Cost of Attendance

For the entering-2026 Greensboro full-time program, first-year tuition is $66,080, including August and three trimesters. The published August and September–June expense allowances bring the combined first-year budget to $100,930, before aid. That is a calculation across the listed periods, not tuition alone. Charlotte Flex tuition is $1,645 per credit for 2026–27. A shorter degree still needs a complete borrowing plan; these are not guaranteed 2027–28 prices.

For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.

8. Elon Law Joint Degree Programs

  • JD/MBA: Elon’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business admits law students separately after their first year. It accepts the LSAT instead of requiring a separate GRE or GMAT. Up to six approved MBA credits count toward the 86-credit JD, and up to nine law credits count toward the MBA. The completion schedule depends on course sequencing rather than an automatic extension of the standard JD calendar.
  • JD/master’s programs (Vermont Law & Graduate School partnerships): Students can combine the JD with a Master of Energy Regulation and Law, Master of Climate and Environmental Policy, or Master of Public Policy in as little as 2.5 years. These require admission to the partner program and careful first-year planning, with Vermont summer study and online coursework.

9. Elon Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)

Elon Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):

  • Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 82.2%
  • BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 4.4%
  • Federal clerkships: 0.7%
  • Public service (including government): 20.7%

North Carolina is the clear center of gravity, followed by South Carolina and the District of Columbia. The pattern supports an application built around regional practice, smaller firms, government, or client-facing public-interest work. Large-firm employment and federal clerkships are possible but uncommon enough that neither should be the assumption behind a large debt commitment.

10. Elon Law Areas of Study and Specializations

Trial and appellate advocacy: Advocacy Fellows combine Evidence, Trial Practice & Procedure, Negotiations, and Appellate Litigation with supervised experience. The Guardian ad Litem clinic adds real appellate records and briefs.

Business and entrepreneurship: Business Fellows, Business Associations, Business Drafting, and the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Clinic connect transactions to the client’s operating needs.

Immigration and humanitarian protection: The Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic turns refugee and asylum study into interviewing, evidence development, and representation for low-income clients.

Constitutional and public law: Faculty work on free speech and civil rights connects with We the People, Elon’s constitutional-law journal, and public-sector placements.

Leadership and public service: Leadership Fellows undertake community-focused capstone work alongside seminars and field experiences. This is an applied leadership pathway, not simply a label for students who held office.

These are routes through courses and programs.

11. Elon Law Clinics and Experiential Learning

Elon’s established clinic offerings include:

  • Guardian ad Litem Appellate Advocacy Clinic: Students analyze juvenile records, research appellate issues, and prepare briefs advocating for abused and neglected children’s best interests in North Carolina appellate courts.
  • Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic: Students interview refugees and asylum seekers, gather evidence, and prepare applications and briefs involving protection, family reunification, citizenship, and related matters.
  • Small Business & Entrepreneurship Clinic: Students advise clients who cannot otherwise afford counsel on entity choice, organizational documents, contracts, employment questions, and regulatory compliance.
  • Social Security Disability Benefits Clinic: Students interview clients, assemble exhibits, write briefs, and prepare for administrative hearings under attorney supervision.
  • Wills Drafting Clinic: Working with Legal Aid of North Carolina clients, students interview, advise, draft estate-planning documents, and oversee execution. Students also rotate through managing-partner responsibilities.

Greensboro’s established clinic roster is not a guarantee that each clinic will run on both campuses. Flex uses its own experiential-credit plan, which can include clinics, externships, advocacy competitions, and residency work.

Pro Bono and Experiential Learning

The full-time JD’s Residency-in-Practice places students with a legal team for ten weeks during the second year. Students work approximately 32–36 hours weekly, preparing research, pleadings, and other supervised assignments. Placements are matched to goals and eligibility; independently arranged placements require approval. Documented settings include Bell Partners and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ legal operations team, whose work spans contracts, intellectual property, and other business matters.

12. Elon Law Notable Faculty and Journals

Faculty

  • John Flynn, Professor of Law and director of the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Clinic and Center for Entrepreneurship, teaches business law and drafting. His experience includes serving as managing director of Carruthers & Roth and practicing in debtor-creditor matters.
  • Katherine Reynolds, Associate Professor of Law and director of the Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic, focuses on refugee and asylum representation. She previously directed a refugee legal-aid organization in Cairo and coauthored an I-730 family-reunification practice manual.
  • Enrique Armijo, Professor of Law, studies the First Amendment, technology, and media law. His professional background includes appellate practice at Covington & Burling and a fellowship with Yale’s Information Society Project.
  • Zak Kramer, Dean and Professor of Law, writes on civil rights. He previously held multiple academic leadership positions at Arizona State, including interim dean, bringing administrative experience alongside his scholarship.

Journals

  • Elon Law Review: Covers legal scholarship broadly.
  • We the People: Elon Law’s Constitutional Law Journal: An online forum focused on constitutional questions.

Journal work develops sustained research and editing skills; it is not interchangeable with client representation.

13. Elon Law Culture and Student Life

Greensboro students study downtown rather than on Elon’s undergraduate campus. The Pro Bono Board, Business Law Association, and advocacy programs give students ways to build relationships around work rather than just social events. A compact trimester schedule makes deliberate involvement more realistic than trying to join everything.

Charlotte is a different daily proposition. The full-time program begins in fall 2027, and Elon plans to house both Charlotte formats on the Queens University campus in Myers Park. Flex is designed for students continuing work and family commitments. Compare the actual class pattern, commute, and community you want, not simply the city name.
