Northern Illinois University College of Law is a public law school in DeKalb. Its strengths include criminal defense, public interest, business law, and health-related legal assistance, with clinics extending into Rockford and Aurora.
This guide walks you through how to get into Northern Illinois Law.

1. Northern Illinois Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Northern Illinois Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 154 | Median: 150 | 25th: 148
- GPA: 75th: 3.64 | Median: 3.41 | 25th: 3.17
Northern Illinois Law Class of 2027:
- LSAT: 75th: 153 | Median: 150 | 25th: 147
- GPA: 75th: 3.59 | Median: 3.26 | 25th: 3.07
These full-time DeKalb cohorts entered in fall 2025 and fall 2024. The LSAT median remained 150 while both quartiles rose one point. The GPA median increased from 3.26 to 3.41, and both GPA quartiles also rose. The entering class grew from 121 to 134. These are not Naperville part-time admissions statistics.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Northern Illinois Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
The school's instructions:
“(two pages, double spaced): Discuss how your personal, academic and/or professional experiences motivated you to pursue a legal education. Since we don't conduct interviews, this is your opportunity to introduce yourself to our admissions committee.”
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
For more on making your whole application work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness (if applicable)
NIU permits an optional addendum addressing a GPA or LSAT concern.
Answer required disclosure questions directly; an academic explanation does not replace a character-and-fitness disclosure.
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Northern Illinois Law Resume Requirements
A resume is optional, but submit one. Include employment, internships, leadership, and service, including work during college. Use clear dates and describe actual responsibilities. Paid work does not become less valuable because it happened outside a legal office.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Northern Illinois Law Letters of Recommendation
NIU requires one letter and accepts up to four. An academic recommendation is strongly preferred. Choose someone who can discuss your reasoning, writing, and follow-through with examples. More letters of recommendation help only when they add evidence rather than repeat praise.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Northern Illinois Law Interview Process
Northern Illinois Law does not conduct formal admissions interviews as part of its J.D. application process.
6. Northern Illinois Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing Policy
The LSAT is required, and NIU uses the highest score. NIU accepts the June LSAT for August entry, but that is a late route with less room for a retake or an incomplete file. Do not confuse the last accepted test with the strongest application timetable.
Application Dates and Fees
NIU publishes this recurring admissions calendar:
- September 1: Applications open.
- April 1: Priority application deadline.
- April 15: First seat-deposit deadline.
- June 1: Second seat-deposit deadline.
Later applications receive consideration as space permits. Completed applications generally receive a decision within four to six weeks. There is no application fee. Apply early enough that a missing recommendation or transcript does not push your completed file behind the priority date.
Program Formats
The first Naperville part-time cohort starts in fall 2027, with applications open beginning September 1, 2026. The four-year program combines two in-person evenings and selected weekends with online coursework, including summer study. It is a different commitment from the three-year DeKalb program, not simply fewer daytime classes.
7. Northern Illinois Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
For new full-time students in 2026-2027, annual tuition is $18,244.80, general and law fees are $8,279.76, and term-material fees are $400. That totals $26,924.56 before living expenses. U.S. citizens and permanent residents pay the same rate regardless of state residency. International tuition is higher.
NIU separately budgets $24,344 for housing, food, books, transportation, personal expenses, and loan fees. Adding those allowances produces a domestic first-year budget of $51,268.56. Those figures describe the full-time program, not a quoted fall 2027 Naperville budget.
All admitted students receive automatic consideration for merit scholarships and tuition waivers. NIU does not award conditional scholarships with academic requirements beyond remaining in good standing. Compare the actual award and net cost, not tuition alone. The Public Interest Law Society also raises funding for summer public-interest assistantships.
Naperville spreads tuition over four years and adds a separate program fee each semester. Budget for that fee and the longer enrollment period rather than assuming equal tuition means equal total cost.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Northern Illinois Law Joint Degree Programs
The J.D./M.B.A. pairs law with NIU's College of Business and permits up to nine credits to count in each direction. Students who have completed the business core can finish in three years and two summers; others generally need four to five years. Consider it when business operations or management genuinely complements your legal goals.
The J.D./M.P.A. partners with NIU's Department of Public Administration through a Public Service Law and Management specialization. It requires separate admission to each program and 106 combined credits: 78 in law and 28 in public administration. This route fits a developed interest in public-sector management, not merely a desire to add another credential.
9. Northern Illinois Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Northern Illinois Law Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 70.1%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 4.7%
- Federal clerkships: 0.0%
- Public service (including government): 31.8%
Illinois was the largest employment destination for this graduating class, followed by Indiana and Texas. Government and public-interest work account for a substantial share of this class, while large-firm placement was limited. Evaluate NIU around an Illinois-centered practice plan and a manageable net cost. These graduates did not attend the new Naperville part-time program.
10. Northern Illinois Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Business Law: The Business Law Certificate combines Business Associations, Federal Income Tax, and additional business courses with a practical or research capstone. The Business Law Innovation Clinic connects that study to entity formation, contracts, and nonprofit work for actual clients.
Criminal Practice: The Criminal Practice Certificate links criminal procedure, evidence, and trial advocacy with supervised practice. The Criminal Defense Clinic and criminal-law externships provide different settings for learning case preparation, negotiation, and courtroom responsibility rather than studying criminal law only through appellate opinions.
Public Interest Law: The Public Interest Law Certificate combines administrative law, practical skills, and approved coursework with experiential study. Civil Justice and Health Advocacy offer distinct client-service settings, allowing students to connect a particular community need to legal work rather than treating public interest as one uniform career.
International Law: The International Law Certificate includes public international law, international business transactions, and a human-rights elective. Its capstone can involve advanced research or NIU's Agen, France program, giving students a comparative dimension alongside their regional U.S. practice interests.
11. Northern Illinois Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
NIU's 90-credit J.D. requires participation in a clinic, externship, or the Prisoners' Rights Project. Its four clinics are:
- Business Law Innovation Clinic: Assist small businesses, underrepresented entrepreneurs, and nonprofits with organizational documents, contracts, leases, and tax-exempt applications.
- Civil Justice Clinic: At the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford, work with low-income clients, older adults, and survivors of abuse on protection orders and other civil matters.
- Criminal Defense Clinic: Handle supervised adult and juvenile criminal matters in Rockford, developing interviewing, investigation, negotiation, and trial skills.
- Health Advocacy Clinic: Work through a medical-legal partnership with Hesed House and Aunt Martha's Health Center in Aurora on benefits, advance planning, and other health-related legal needs.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
The Prisoners' Rights Project, a separate program, partners with the local Federal Bar Association chapter on federal civil-rights cases. Third-year students can investigate claims, work with witnesses and experts, and prepare cases for trial across two semesters.
Externships become available after three completed semesters and can be paid. Past sites include the City of Chicago Department of Law, Prairie State Legal Services, and the Illinois Attorney General's Office. The pro bono program provides additional volunteer opportunities, including some for first-year students.
Naperville's planned public-defender clinic should not be confused with the existing Rockford Criminal Defense Clinic. Build your experiential plan around your campus and actual course prerequisites.
12. Northern Illinois Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Cassandra L. Hill, dean and professor of law, works on legal writing, learning theory, and assessment. She coauthored Legal Analysis: 100 Exercises for Mastery, connecting her scholarship to the skills students develop early in legal education.
- Daniel S. McConkie Jr., associate dean for academic affairs and professor of law, studies criminal procedure, plea bargaining, and discovery. His background includes eight years as a state and federal prosecutor in California.
- Evan Bernick, associate professor of law, focuses on constitutional and administrative law. He coauthored The Original Meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment: Its Letter and Spirit, published by Harvard University Press.
- Wendy Hinton Vaughn, director of clinics and clinical professor, works in poverty and family law. She supervises Civil Justice work at the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic; that clinic received the Illinois State Bar Association's 2018 Excellence in Legal Education Award.
Journals
- Northern Illinois University Law Review: This student-edited journal publishes three issues annually and an online supplement featuring student work.
13. Northern Illinois Law Culture and Student Life
NIU's fall 2025 class of 134 entered a law school within DeKalb's larger university campus. The First-generation Law Student Society provides a peer-support community; the Public Interest Law Society links service interests with summer funding. Trial Advocacy Society and Moot Court Society offer additional ways to develop skills with classmates.
This is not a downtown Chicago campus. Rockford and Aurora clinics extend NIU's regional footprint, while past externship placements connect students with Illinois agencies and legal-services organizations. Transportation and scheduling are practical parts of choosing an upper-level course. Think about the weekly routine and the professional relationships you want to develop, not just the map.
