How to Get Into Ohio Northern Law (2026-2027 Guide)

Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law offers residential study in Ada, Ohio, and a fully online, part-time JD. Practical preparation connects the residential program with surrounding communities, while the online program follows a four-year format.

This guide walks you through how to get into Ohio Northern Law.

1. Ohio Northern Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics

Ohio Northern Law Class of 2029:

  • LSAT: Median: 149
  • GPA: Median: 3.34

Ohio Northern Law Class of 2028:

  • LSAT: 75th: 150 | Median: 148 | 25th: 145
  • GPA: 75th: 3.69 | Median: 3.36 | 25th: 3.07

These are the residential cohorts entering in 2026 and 2025. The LSAT median rose one point while GPA was nearly unchanged. The separate 2026 online cohort had medians of 154 and 3.31. Do not use the residential LSAT median to assess the online program simply because both carry the ONU name.

Summer Starter is a separate admissions path with an interview for applicants whose strong undergraduate work accompanies a lower LSAT.

For your program, aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.

For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.

2. Ohio Northern Law Application Essays

Personal Statement (required)

The school's instructions: “Prepare a personal statement detailing your interest in ONU Law and select a prompt of your choice as directed on the application.”

For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.

For more on addressing school interest within this personal statement, see my Why X Essay Guide.

Summer Starter Statement of Interest (encouraged)

Applicants pursuing Summer Starter are encouraged to explain their interest in that program.

For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.

Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources

I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.

3. Ohio Northern Law Resume Requirements

Submit an updated resume covering education, employment, activities, and leadership. Make dates and responsibilities easy to follow. Show sustained work and service alongside academic accomplishments, particularly when those commitments help explain your preparation for a demanding degree.

For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.

4. Ohio Northern Law Letters of Recommendation

ONU requires one recommendation for fall residential and Summer Starter applicants, and two for online applicants. It accepts up to three. Choose professors, employers, or mentors who know your work and readiness for law school. Assign your letters of recommendation through CAS.

For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).

5. Ohio Northern Law Interview Process

Summer Starter candidates must complete an in-person interview by invitation. Prepare to discuss your academic record, the gap between your grades and LSAT, and why the program fits. An invitation is part of selection, not admission itself.

6. Ohio Northern Law Deadlines and Decision Options

Testing Policy

ONU accepts the LSAT. Its application instructions also expressly permit the GRE for fall residential and summer applicants, using ETS code 0929.

If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.

Application Dates and Fees

Applications for the 2027 residential and online entering classes are open. ONU accepts applications from September through August on a rolling basis, admitting students until the class fills. The application is free. Its recurring priority scholarship deadline is May 1; apply well before that rather than treating the end of the admissions window as your target.

The online program begins its application window September 15 and also closes when full. Choose your format before arranging recommendations, since the required count differs. A complete file needs the application, statement, resume, test information, transcripts, and assigned CAS materials.

Summer Starter uses the general fall application and adds an invitation-based interview. Complete the file early enough to accommodate that process and an eight-week summer commitment. This is a different entry schedule, not a reason to postpone preparing your application.

7. Ohio Northern Law Scholarships and Financial Aid

Your application is automatically considered for merit aid. ONU weighs academic credentials, coursework, employment, community involvement, and extracurricular experience. The published scholarship policy protects first-year merit awards for students who remain in good academic standing, and students can be reevaluated for later-year awards. May 1 is the recurring priority deadline for scholarship consideration.

For 2026-2027, residential tuition is $36,700, with the first-year January term included. The university's published first-year cost-of-attendance budget is $61,215, including tuition, general fees, and estimated expenses. Online tuition is $1,535 per credit. Additional law-program charges depend on the year and format, so tuition alone is not the full bill.

Compare offers over the entire program: three residential years and four online years create different living-expense and earnings calculations. Complete the FAFSA for applicable aid consideration, and distinguish institutional scholarships from money you would have to repay. An award matters because of the net cost it leaves you, not just its face value.

For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.

8. Ohio Northern Law Joint Degrees

ONU's 3+3 pathway combines undergraduate study with the JD in six years rather than seven. ONU participates alongside undergraduate partner institutions in this accelerated route. It is undergraduate-to-law-school sequencing, not a master's degree added to the JD after enrollment.

For an applicant still completing college, the useful question is whether the accelerated schedule supports both academic preparation and the intended career. For someone who already holds a bachelor's degree, focus instead on the residential or online JD and the certificate tracks that fit the work you plan to pursue.

9. Ohio Northern Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)

Ohio Northern's Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):

  • Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 83.7%
  • BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 2.0%
  • Federal clerkships: 0.0%
  • Public service (including government): 18.4%

Ohio was the largest employment destination, followed by Michigan and New York. Small firms were a much more common destination than large firms. Build your cost comparison around the practice settings you would actually pursue, and use externships and alumni relationships to develop connections in that market. A fully online degree changes where you can study; it does not replace the work of building local professional relationships.

10. Ohio Northern Law Areas of Study and Specializations

ONU's optional certificate tracks require at least 15 credits in the specialty and a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the diploma designation.

Civil Litigation: The Civil Litigation certificate pairs dispute-oriented study with ONU's advocacy program. It is a useful direction for students interested in developing a case, preparing written arguments, and choosing among negotiation, settlement, and trial rather than treating litigation as public speaking alone.

Corporate and Commercial Practice: Corporate Law and Bankruptcy and Commercial Law are separate certificate tracks. Together with transactional work in the ONU Legal Clinic, they provide concrete ways to explore business formation, financial distress, governance, and the documents organizations need to operate.

Criminal Law: The Criminal Law certificate connects criminal-system study with advocacy training. The John J. Gibbons National Criminal Procedure Competition gives interested students another setting for working through procedural arguments.

Public Law and Policy: The Public Law and Policy certificate includes constitutional and regulatory subjects. Pair that coursework with public-interest fieldwork or the Public Interest Law Association. The useful connection is between a public problem, the institutions responding to it, and the legal tools involved.

11. Ohio Northern Law Clinics and Experiential Learning

Clinics, Externships, and Competitions

  • ONU Legal Clinic: Based in Lima, students handle supervised civil representation and transactional work, including family matters, estate planning, small-business compliance, and nonprofit governance.
  • Rural Practice Clinic: ONU's announced expansion extends client service across Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam, and Van Wert counties through the Lawyers = Justice collaboration with Toledo Law and state bar organizations.
  • Externship Program: Approved placements include courts, government offices, public defenders, prosecutors, legal aid, and firms. Students work with a supervising lawyer or judge and ONU faculty.
  • Daniel S. Guy First-Year Appellate Advocacy Competition: Residential first-year students develop oral advocacy through the competition associated with Legal Research and Writing.
  • Burke E. Smith Mock Trial Competition: Upper-level students work in teams on trial preparation and courtroom performance.
  • Philip C. Jessup International Law Competition: Students prepare written and oral arguments involving public international law in a simulated international court setting.

Pro Bono and Experiential Learning

The Public Interest Law Association connects students with pro bono attorneys, judges, and legal aid staff on work serving low-income residents. Online students can pursue externships after the spring of their second year, for two to six credits, with placements beyond Ohio. Distinguish client service, credited fieldwork, and competition practice when planning the skills you want to develop.

12. Ohio Northern Law Notable Faculty and Journals

Faculty

  • Rick Bales, Professor of Law: Teaches labor and employment law, dispute resolution, torts, and civil procedure. He is a labor arbitrator whose scholarship examines approaches to resolving workplace disputes.
  • Jean-Marie Kamatali, Professor of Law: Directs the Center for Democratic Governance and Rule of Law. His work includes human rights, immigration, transitional justice, and institutional rebuilding following mass violence.
  • Melissa Kidder, Associate Professor of Law: Brings estate-planning practice and appellate-court experience to her teaching. Her research addresses experiential education, professional development, and the community role of legal clinics.
  • Jami Sayeed, Assistant Professor of Law: Teaches contracts and health law. Her background includes Medicaid administration and administrative adjudication, connecting health-system questions with procedure and access to services.

Journals

  • Ohio Northern University Law Review: Publishes scholarship, student work, and symposium material. Residential membership includes grade invitations and a write-on opportunity.
  • Civil Rights Law Journal: Articles examining developing legal issues involving individual freedom, human dignity and injustice.
  • International Law Journal: Student-edited scholarship analyzing law from global perspectives and addressing international legal issues.

13. Ohio Northern Law Culture and Student Life

Residential life centers on Ada and a smaller university community rather than a downtown legal district. Build a routine that includes classmates and the wider region, especially when clinical work or an externship takes you beyond campus. The Student Bar Association organizes events including Race Judicata and the Barristers Ball.

Groups include the Black Law Student Association, Legal Association of Women, Lawtinos, and OUTLAWS. Online students can participate in organizations and advocacy activities too. The four-year program combines live and independent coursework, so working applicants need a durable schedule for studying, attending class, and maintaining professional connections.
