Santa Clara University School of Law offers a Jesuit legal education in Santa Clara, California, with full-time and Flex JD programs. Its strengths include technology, privacy, entrepreneurship, and public-interest law, supported by specialized programs and clinics.
This guide walks you through how to get into Santa Clara Law.

1. Santa Clara Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Santa Clara Law Class of 2029:
- LSAT: 75th: 164 | Median: 161 | 25th: 158
- GPA: 75th: 3.72 | Median: 3.52 | 25th: 3.18
Santa Clara Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 162 | Median: 159 | 25th: 157
- GPA: 75th: 3.74 | Median: 3.50 | 25th: 3.21
The newest block is Santa Clara's fall 2026 opening-day academic profile; the older block combines full-time and part-time students entering in fall 2025. Total entering enrollment grew from 256 to 283, with full-time enrollment rising from 206 to 234. Flex enrollment decreased from 50 to 49. The separate fall 2026 Flex medians were 161 and 3.30.
For your program, aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Santa Clara Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
Submit no more than three double-spaced pages in 12-point type.
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
Cura Personalis Statement (optional)
Use this additional statement to develop a perspective or formative experience that adds to the committee's understanding of you.
For more on how to write a diversity or perspective statement, see my Diversity Statement Examples and Diversity Statement Guide.
Program Statements (optional)
The application includes statement options for Flex JD, Tech Edge JD, and Public Interest JD. Tech Edge and Public Interest JD are cohort programs you seek when applying, not certificates to add casually after enrollment.
For more on how to write a Why X essay, see my Why X Essay Guide.
For more on making all of these essays work together, see my Cohesive Narrative Guide.
Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Santa Clara Law Resume Requirements
A resume is required. Present your education, employment, service, and activities clearly, with dates and responsibilities easy to follow.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Santa Clara Law Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are optional. Santa Clara accepts no more than three through the application process.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Santa Clara Law Interview Process
Santa Clara does not require an interview as part of its standard JD application requirements.
6. Santa Clara Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing Policy
Santa Clara accepts the LSAT or GRE from the five years preceding application submission, but not JD-Next in their place. If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Application Dates and Fees
- Applications open: September; the fall 2027 application is open.
- Nonbinding Early Review: November 30, with a completed file and CAS report, for a decision by January 15. November LSAT scores received by December 3 qualify.
- Priority deadline: February 15 for full admission and scholarship consideration, including Tech Edge and Public Interest JD. January is the last priority LSAT.
- Last accepted LSAT: April; June scores receive case-by-case consideration.
- Final application deadline: None. Applications remain open until the class fills.
- Application fee: None.
Early Review preserves your ability to compare offers. Admissions and scholarships are rolling, so an early complete file matters. A future LSAT registration holds the file unless you request review as is. Once the file goes to the committee, additional materials, including new LSAT scores, will not be considered.
Program Formats
The four-year Flex JD combines online work with an in-person week at the start of each semester and three additional long weekends. Account for that travel and time commitment before choosing the format.
7. Santa Clara Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Merit Scholarships
Admission scholarships receive automatic consideration. Santa Clara does not negotiate their amounts, conditions, or terms. Awards apply to fall and spring tuition, not fees.
James A. Emery, S.J. Merit Law Scholarship
Renewal requires a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress. The GPA condition matters when comparing offers.
Law Faculty Scholarship
Renewal requires satisfactory academic progress, rather than the Emery award's separate 3.0 condition.
Dean's Fellowships
Awards can cover full tuition, excluding fees, with satisfactory academic progress required for renewal.
Public Interest Scholarship
The listed award is $10,000. Applicants to Public Interest JD receive consideration through that program's application.
PLEDGE Scholarship
PLEDGE was offered to fall 2026 entrants meeting its deposit deadline. Its availability for fall 2027 remains undecided.
Cost of Attendance
For 2026-27, tuition is $2,350 per unit. The first-year budget uses $65,800 in full-time tuition or $51,700 for Flex. Adding the listed student fee and living allowances produces budgets of $102,634 and $88,534, respectively, before loan-origination fees or additional international-student charges. Compare the full degree cost, not just the first-year award.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Santa Clara Law Joint Degree Programs
Santa Clara offers these combinations alongside the JD:
- JD/MBA: With the Leavey School of Business, typically three and a half to four years.
- JD/MSIS: With Leavey, combining law and information systems, typically three years.
- JD/LLM: Additional legal study through Santa Clara's School of Law, with the combined pathway declared during the second year.
For the business combinations, apply separately during the first law-school year, before exceeding 45 law units including current enrollment. Students must remain in good standing and develop an approved course plan with both schools. Tech Edge and Public Interest JD are cohort certificate programs, not separate graduate degrees.
9. Santa Clara Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Santa Clara Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 75.3%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 23.2%
- Federal clerkships: 0.5%
- Public service (including government): 15.2%
California overwhelmingly leads the employment geography; New York and Washington follow at much smaller scale. Large firms are a meaningful destination, but they are only one part of the picture. Smaller firms, government, and public-interest organizations also hire graduates. Evaluate Santa Clara against the California work you want and the debt you would carry into that job search.
10. Santa Clara Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Technology and Entrepreneurship: The Datta Center for High Tech Law, Tech Edge JD, and Entrepreneurs' Law Clinic connect technology interests to legal practice. Tech Edge combines mentoring with practical milestones across law, business, and technology; a technical undergraduate degree is not required.
Privacy and Cybersecurity: The Privacy Law Certificate provides a focused route into data-related legal work. Its curriculum includes Privacy Law, Cybersecurity Law, AI Governance, and Technology Licensing, connecting questions about information use to regulation, product counseling, and commercial agreements.
Public Interest: Public Interest JD combines faculty and attorney mentoring with career planning and three semesters of experiential learning. Through the Center for Social Justice and Public Service, students connect that plan to service, advocacy, and a sequence of professional milestones.
International Law and Human Rights: The Center for Global Law and Policy and International Human Rights Clinic connect international study with legal advocacy. Students can work on submissions to United Nations and Inter-American human-rights bodies rather than limiting their experience to doctrinal coursework.
11. Santa Clara Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
Santa Clara's clinical work includes transactional counseling, international advocacy, and community representation.
- Entrepreneurs' Law Clinic: Advise startups on formation, financing, contracts, employment, and intellectual-property issues while attending a twice-weekly seminar.
- International Human Rights Clinic: Prepare legal briefs, reports, policy letters, and advocacy submissions under faculty supervision.
- Northern California Innocence Project: Investigate wrongful-conviction claims and assist with post-conviction representation and reform projects.
- Consumer Law at the Alexander Community Law Center: Interview clients and help with advice, case preparation, negotiation, and selected consumer representation.
- Immigration Law at the Alexander Community Law Center: Work with immigration clients through advice clinics and selected cases, developing interviewing and advocacy skills.
- Workers' Rights at the Alexander Community Law Center: Assist workers with legal problems through counseling and casework, including preparation for negotiations and hearings.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
The Alexander Center's consumer, immigration, and workers' rights work shares one clinical organization and supervised practice structure. Externships combine approved legal placements with a related class. At the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office Misdemeanor Externship, students research, prepare documents, and assist investigations under a senior attorney. Students completing 50 qualifying pro bono hours in an academic year receive recognition. Flex students should build daytime practice obligations into their plans alongside the program's scheduled campus visits.
12. Santa Clara Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Eric Goldman: Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Law. He studies internet, intellectual-property, and advertising law, co-directs the Datta Center, and previously served as Epinions.com's general counsel.
- Laura Norris: Associate Dean for Innovation and Clinical Professor of Law. She co-directs Tech Edge JD and the Entrepreneurs' Law Clinic and was Cypress Semiconductor's first vice president of legal affairs.

- David L. Sloss: John A. and Elizabeth H. Sutro Professor of Law and Public Interest JD Co-Director. His fields include international and constitutional law; he previously worked on arms-control treaty negotiations.
Journals
- Santa Clara Law Review: General-interest, student-edited legal scholarship.
- Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal: Technology-focused legal scholarship.
- Santa Clara Journal of International Law: Student-run international-law scholarship.
13. Santa Clara Law Culture and Student Life
Santa Clara combines a campus-based Jesuit institution with the professional setting of Silicon Valley. The fall 2026 full-time entering class had 234 students, alongside 49 Flex students. Those formats bring different schedules and work histories into the same law-school community.
Organizations include the First Generation Law Student Association, Privacy Law Student Organization, Law and Business Society, ChIPs, and Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. These provide ways to connect professional interests with classmates. The Alexander Center's community work and technology-focused events offer different routes into the surrounding legal community.
