1. Wayne State Law Admissions Numbers and Statistics
Wayne State Law Class of 2028:
- LSAT: 75th: 166 | Median: 164 | 25th: 157
- GPA: 75th: 3.95 | Median: 3.89 | 25th: 3.56
Wayne State Law Class of 2027:
- LSAT: 75th: 164 | Median: 162 | 25th: 157
- GPA: 75th: 3.94 | Median: 3.84 | 25th: 3.58
These figures describe the fall 2025 and fall 2024 entering classes. The LSAT median rose two points and the GPA median rose 0.05. The lower LSAT quartile stayed at 157, while the lower GPA quartile slipped from 3.58 to 3.56. The fall 2025 class had 129 students, including 120 full-time and nine part-time students.
Aim to be at or above at least one median to be competitive. Above both puts you in a stronger position. Below both medians, this is a prayer, not a reach.
For context on how medians affect your strategy, see How to Build a Smart Law School List.
2. Wayne State Law Application Essays
Personal Statement (required)
The school's instructions:
“A personal statement that enables the admissions committee to gain a better sense of who the applicant is and what they will bring to Wayne Law.”
For more on how to write a personal statement, see my Personal Statement Examples and Personal Statement Guide.
Second Statement (optional)
The school's instructions:
“Applicants are invited to submit an optional second statement, responding to one of the following prompts: Describe a quality or skill that you have and are proud of. If you think it will help you in your legal career, tell us how. Would your friends and acquaintances describe you differently from the way you would describe yourself How has the world you came from positively shaped who you are today? Will you bring to this law school ideas, perspectives, or experiences that you expect are different from those shared by most law students? What are they? Describe a challenge, failure, or setback you have faced. It might relate to your life as a whole (for example, a health condition, financial challenges, or difficult family circumstances), or it might relate to a specific hurdle you faced in your education or at the workplace. How did you confront it? What, if anything, might you have done differently?”

Addenda and Character & Fitness Resources
I'll be publishing a guide to addenda and character and fitness.
3. Wayne State Law Resume Requirements
Wayne requires a reverse-chronological resume covering education, employment, and service. Make your dates, responsibilities, and significant activities easy to follow.
For more on preparing your resume, see my Resume Examples and Resume Guide.
4. Wayne State Law Letters of Recommendation
Wayne requires two letters of recommendation. Current or recent graduates must include a professor's recommendation; applicants out of school for three years may use an employer. Letters from family or friends are not accepted.
For more on recommendations, see my LOR Guide (Applicants) and LOR Guide (Writers).
5. Wayne State Law Interview Process
Wayne State does not conduct individual admissions interviews as part of the standard application process.
6. Wayne State Law Deadlines and Decision Options
Testing Policy
Wayne's fall 2027 application accepts the LSAT or GRE. JD-Next may supplement an LSAT application but is not a standalone admission test. The GRE reporting code is 0185.
If you're considering the GRE, read my LSAT vs. GRE guide before deciding.
Application Dates and Fees
- Scholarship Priority Deadline: March 15, 2027.
- Final Application Deadline: August 1, 2027.
- Application Fee: No school application fee.
- Last Eligible LSAT: June of the entering year.
Applications receive individualized, rolling review. Submit a complete application in time for scholarship priority rather than treating the August closing date as the only relevant date.
Program Schedules
The full-time day program has 30 first-year credits, split evenly between fall and spring. The combined day/evening program has three evening courses plus one or two daytime courses each semester, totaling 22–30 first-year credits. The part-time evening program begins with 16 credits, all at night. These are different first-year workloads, not interchangeable names for the same schedule.
7. Wayne State Law Scholarships and Financial Aid
Tuition and Fees
Wayne's 2026-2027 tuition is $1,347.17 per credit for residents and $1,477.90 per credit for nonresidents. The first-year credit load depends on the schedule you choose. Fees and living expenses are additional, so the evening program's lower initial course load should not be mistaken for the total cost of the degree.
Merit Scholarships
Law-admissions awards and other university or internal scholarships have separate processes. Complete the FAFSA for financial-aid consideration and pay attention to the March 15 admissions scholarship-priority date. The 2025 ABA report identifies no academic scholarship conditions beyond good standing for its reported cohort.
For a Michigan-centered applicant, Wayne's resident rate and the actual scholarship offer can materially change the comparison with private schools. Compare the remaining cost across the full degree, including the schedule's effect on how many years you will be enrolled.
For more on scholarship strategy, see How to Negotiate Law School Scholarships.
8. Wayne State Law Joint Degree Programs
Wayne's combined-degree options include:
- JD/MBA with the Mike Ilitch School of Business.
- JD/MS in Criminal Justice with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- JD/MA in Economics, History, or Political Science, also through Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- JD/LLM, integrating JD and advanced law study within the Law School.
The JD/MBA requires separate admission to both programs. The criminal-justice combination requires admission to both programs and completion of the first law year before beginning criminal-justice coursework. The Dispute Resolution MA/JD is under an admissions moratorium, so it is not an available substitute for these programs.
9. Wayne State Law Employment Outcomes (Class of 2025)
Wayne State Class of 2025 employment outcomes (reported to the ABA, measured 10 months after graduation):
- Full-time, long-term bar-passage-required employment (ABA): 84.7%
- BigLaw (firms with 101+ attorneys): 19.4%
- Federal clerkships: 0.0%
- Public service (including government): 17.7%
Michigan is overwhelmingly Wayne's employment market. The large-firm share is one part of the picture, but the central question is whether you want to build a legal career in the state. Wayne's local practice connections and Detroit-based clinical work make that a much more natural plan than treating the school as a generic national credential.
10. Wayne State Law Areas of Study and Specializations
Civil Rights: The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights gives Wayne's public-interest identity a specific institutional home. Its work on racial equity and structural inequality connects legal study to issues affecting Detroit and the institutions serving its communities.
Government and Oversight: The Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy studies and teaches legislative oversight, accountability, and institutional integrity. Its research and programming connect public-law interests to the practical work of examining how government and other powerful institutions operate.
Intellectual Property: The Intellectual Property Law Institute is a partnership with the University of Detroit Mercy and University of Windsor. Full-time students can take participating courses across the three schools, expanding study in patents, copyright, trademarks, and related subjects while paying home-school tuition.
Business and Entrepreneurship: The Program for Entrepreneurship and Business Law coordinates coursework, clinics, externships, and community engagement. The Business and Community Law Clinic adds transactional work for organizations, giving this area a practical connection beyond corporate-law classroom study.
Health and Community Advocacy: The Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic works with the Karmanos Cancer Center. It connects law with barriers to patient care, including insurance, housing, employment, and benefits, rather than treating health law solely as hospital regulation.
11. Wayne State Law Clinics and Experiential Learning
Wayne's clinical work connects legal training with clients and organizations in the Detroit region.
- Appeal and Post-Conviction Advocacy Clinic: Students investigate and draft appellate or post-conviction work through the State Appellate Defender Office.
- Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic: Students represent people seeking asylum and other immigration benefits.
- Immigration Appellate Advocacy Clinic: Students develop case strategy and prepare briefs for the Board of Immigration Appeals.
- Community Advocacy Clinic: Students assist community groups with non-litigation policy solutions.
- Business and Community Law Clinic: Students prepare organizational and tax-exemption documents for nonprofit groups.
- Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic: Students interview and counsel Karmanos patients about legal problems affecting care.
Pro Bono and Experiential Learning
The student-run Free Legal Aid Clinic offers another practice setting, with supervised work on pleadings, motions, and trial preparation. Externship options include Corporate Counsel, Judicial, Holistic Defense, Public Service, and Lawyering in the Nation's Capital. Public Interest Law Fellowships support low-paid or unpaid summer work; recent placements have included the State Appellate Defender Office and Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice. Those fellowships are distinct from for-credit externships.
12. Wayne State Law Notable Faculty and Journals
Faculty
- Peter Hammer: Professor of Law and A. Alfred Taubman Endowed Chair. He directs the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights and studies structural racism, economics, and public health.
- Noah Hall: Professor of Law. An environmental and water-law scholar, he founded the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center and served as a special assistant attorney general in Michigan's Flint water investigation.
- Sabrina Balgamwalla: Associate Professor of Law and director of the Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic. Her scholarship addresses immigration, border governance, and the experiences of people navigating immigration systems.
- Marilyn Kelly: Distinguished Jurist in Residence. A former chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, she brings appellate experience and longstanding work on access to justice and judicial selection.
Journals
- Wayne Law Review: Articles, book reviews, notes and comments on timely legal topics.
- The Journal of Law in Society: Student-managed scholarship on the intersection of law and society.
- Journal of Business Law: Articles, notes, and comments on business law.
13. Wayne State Law Culture and Student Life
Wayne's 129-student fall 2025 entering class is relatively compact, with several first-year schedules serving different working and academic circumstances. The Midtown campus places the law school within the larger university. Moot Court, Mock Trial, Jessup, and the Jaffe Transactional Law Competition offer different ways to build a working community.
Detroit gives those activities a practical setting. Wayne's clinics serve local people and organizations, while its employment pattern is heavily Michigan-based. The city and state are central to the school's value, particularly when resident tuition and a scholarship reduce the cost.
